FYI I'm not very good at computers let me start from the beginning, there was a very loud grinding sound coming from my pump, so I took off my pump, noticed it was a little low on coolant, and topped it up with some distilled water. now when I first turned it on after that, there was a short period where there was a muffled grinding sound (10 secs) then it stopped. all fine and dandy, however, now my core temps are going way too high, its not the sensors malfunctioning, I felt it, its actually way too hot, its idling around 70C. I figured it might need a fresh dab of thermal paste, so I bought some arctic silver, and applied it, but now its idling around 86C, and powers off after 5-10 mins. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I played around in the BIOS for a bit, but couldn't do anything that helped, any suggestions?
Pump could be damaged or dead.
generally speaking grinding noises coming from things that are supposed to spin is not good
Your pump is dead. Don't turn on your computer, get the pump replaced. Also if you're not good with computers, why do you have a water cooled system? There is a lot of maintenance and situations like these happen, so custom loop cooling is typically only bothered with by overclockers and people that have a good understanding of those systems. Also throw that Arctic Silver in the trash, the cure time is too long compared to something like Arctic MX-4, which is better in every way aside from price.
