Currently, I have to wait about two to three minutes or so from when I first turn on my computer to when it is in a useable state. I would like to know how to get it to be in a useable state faster. My problem isn't with booting up, more with the period between seeing my desktop to when I can start running applications without them being slow and unusable.

I do keep my computer clean with regular virus scans, defrags, and CCleaner sessions. I'm curious to know why my mother's laptop can boot up and be ready faster than my PC which has obviously better specs (and is kept in better condition.)
