First post in and already you're starting this shit.
WoW was certainly fun as shit when I first joined. I tried out a trial back when burning crusade was hot and fresh off the press but couldn't get into it (probably cause I didn't play with anyone I knew or liked.) A few years down the line, a few of my friends hooked me up with the battle chest and I finally got into it now that I had some comrades to play with. I found wrath to be pretty fun and interesting and cata was fun in its own right (until 4.3 that that is.) And I fell out right about the time that Mists launched. To tell the truth....I'd happily return to the game if they'd ditch the subscription requirement and if I had a computer that didn't run the game like ass on anything higher than minimum requirements.
I only played casually around the time BC came out, I feel like too much has changed for me to want to buy every expansion and re-sub, if i can even remember the account I used to have. Though yeah, like Solo said, become B2P or F2P i'd give it another shot.
I feel that a oft overlooked factor to WoW being successful is the fact that they had trial disks freakin' EVERYWHERE. It was on par to when AOL was a thing and they had trial disks. Said it before: They even had them in the least likely to find a trial disk magazine you could think of, like COOKING magazines. For some reason WoW was never my cup of coffee. I tried playing a P.Server once and while yes, it wasn't a 100% authentic experience, it still didn't seem very interesting to me personally.
reasons I hear for why other MMOs fail 1: They're not Warcraft 2: They're trying to be Warcraft there's an ebb and flow between enjoying the game for what it is and sticking to it because its namesake is considered 'the best' and everything else is only ever compared to it
I started playing it because it is Warcraft lol. But it was pretty good and fun back then too.

Your computer must be beyond awful if it can't run WoW.
WoW had some pretty fun gameplay coupled with a very intensive, easy to grasp and fun story/lore. It's a good game, yeah, but you can't account all of its success just to the gameplay. If a new franchise came out with maybe two or so successful games and then turned itself into an MMO, maybe it would work out. As it is, it looks like nobody wants to just jump into another MMO without having some connections to the game series...
But WoW can run on a toaster. Your computer must be beyond awful if it can't run WoW.
Its not like my rig CAN'T run it (it can.) But the performance is beyond god awful. Draw distance is utter crap (complicating my PvP life.) And even in the most docile of areas, I can barely get above 20 fps. That and due to the fact I'm an avid raid tank, playing the game is simply not feasible for me until I get something better suited to running the game while there's a clusterfuck going on.

What's before a toaster?
A laptop that was considered "low end" during 2009. Nuff said.
i played WoW because it was fun, and i only got serious when wrath came out because arthas was a total evil dick and i loved him in WC3:TFT [editline]24th September 2013[/editline] also it wasn't graphically demanding yet good simultaniously in 2007
I really enjoyed WoW when I played it to be honest. There was something fun to the 14 year old version of myself about simply exploring a vast, detailed world like the one that World of Warcraft brought to the table. I could literally walk from zone to zone for hours and enjoyed seeing everything and it was the first MMO that really felt participatory, due to the way the main cities were structured. As I got older, I didn't really enjoy the exploration as much as I did when I was younger. I didn't fully explore every environment and go into every building in Guild Wars because they were almost too big, but they didn't give enough reason to enter every building. So, I'd say awesome, huge and easily accessible landmarks are a necessity in every location. I find that WoW did this better than any game to date.
I still think there's never been an mmo as accessible and... I don't know, 'playable'(?) as wow. So many mmo's I get bored of permanently, but I don't think I've ever replayed so much content on a game as I have on wow. Levelling and playing through dungeons was always so enjoyable to me.
I wish Blizzard would drop the monthly subscription, too. They can still earn plenty of money by releasing expansions every two years and selling in-game items like mounts and pets. I started playing in 2005, before any expansion came out. Highest level character was a level 57 Troll Shaman. Kinda wish I kept him so I could play Death Knight in WOTLK, but I played that class during that expansion's beta. It was pretty fun beta testing something overpowered!

There's no way they'd ever make more than $65million with micro-transactions. Like just not at all. Ever.

I've been playing Guild Wars 2 since release and been trying to convince some buddies to play it, but the only thing close to trial is a 'free weekend' every few months....so obviously i haven't convinced anyone to actually play this thing.
