Mine were growing in horizontally, they weren't causing any pain when they were coming in and when they were half grown out.
But to be on the safe side I had mine removed just over 2 weeks ago, so I guess I can say I don't have to ever worry about them again.

Like a few people have said, if you think you're in pain while they're coming in, just wait until you've found out that they're rotten and need to be taken out...now [i]that's[/i] fun
