I was wondering how I could achieve a picture similar to this (reference pic).

I have a camera that takes very high resolution pictures but I haven't a clue on how to produce an image like this.

Photo quality isn't all about Mega pixels. its Sensor size. Point and shoot Camera's have a TINY sensor, and the larger the Mega Pixels get the worse the quality. YOu need an DSLR for good photos.
your Coolpix Uses a 1/1.7" sensor. The 3rd smallest one.

a 4/3rds Olympia DSLR or better Takes good pictures.

I think it has something to do with exposure settings...
I know my camera is capable of it.
