I really want to pursue a career in game development. I think I want to be an animator but I've heard it takes alot of skill to actually get a job at a company. Do you guys think this is a good idea, if it is, do you have any tips or programs to get started? Be brutally honest because this is my career and I want to pursue the correct one. Sorry if this is in the incorrect section.
First things first Are you pursuing or have a relevant degree/diploma?
Well, I'm graduating High-school this year so no.
First off, you should start with something small like game-modding or freelance work to actually practice
Okay, any special programs I might need?
use 3ds max, Maya, or any other professional 3D programs. As it seems that not many video game developing company's model or animate in blender. To me, animation is actually easy ( Now with Mo caps and stuff) you might want to go freelance for a while since your a beginner, post videos on youtube or a 3d animating site to get feedback for your work. as for getting started, maybe looking up tutorial's on websites or asking professional animators for advice.

When it comes to this industry a back full of good college grades doesn't count as high as a portfolio filled with high quality stuff. If you really want a job you have to make good stuff to show them what you can.
Well i'm going for my university interview for games programming today so i would suggest getting an actual diploma first at college to get the initial grasp of how development works. That or like the others said practice alone too by figuring out different ways of animating like using flash or 3ds max. I would suggest Max since thats the one im most accustomed to and its rather easy to animate the characters with since it gives you already made rigs in the program.
