I have an IBM Thinkpad T61, which I had just bought (used). I was TOLD it's in working order. Which it seems to be. Runs good, nothing noticeably wrong in Windows.
But it sometimes makes this weird noise. It's like a whinny high-pitch, not super loud, but enough to be annoying. Coming from the center of the machine. But it only happens when the HD is active. But it's not everytime, it's also not when the machine is hot too; sometimes it sounds on boot. It's not the hard-drive also, I had taken it out, and ran it for awhile on my desktop. The sound is where the RAM is, could that be the problem? Getting to it is kinda of a bitch, so I haven't tried pulling out one of the chips.
tl;dr laptop makes weird noises when the HD is active (sometimes, and it's not the drive) what do :(
Thanks
I don't think RAM can really make noise even if its dying...and if the RAM was dying you'd have performance issues....look for a fan...my guess is thats whats dying
High pitched squeeling usually means faulty Capacitors on a pc. Not clue what it could be on a laptop since ive never seen a capacitor big enough to make sound like that in a laptop.
Mayby battery or screen power inverter?
:(
I can replace caps no problem. But know nothing of inverters/transformers stuff like that.
I can still return the laptop, should I say fuck it, return it? I don't want to open it up and not be able to get it shut again. Since i'll try a fan replacement.
It could very well be the fan.
You could find some ply wood disassemble the laptop place the mother board on the ply wood start it up and inspect the thing.
Or just take it back.
My guess is the fan. If the fan is somewhere around the middle then it would have to be it. It happening whilst your laptop is hot also leads me to conclude that it is your fan.
In some rare conditions I've had the CPU making a peeping noise.

Capacitors, even faulty capacitors don't make noise without visible signs of failure from venting. Laptops are confined spaces, so designers usually use ceramic or polymer capacitors which are far less prone to failure.
Here's a couple of things that could be the source of the problem:
- One of the inductors somewhere on the motherboard is experiencing coil whine. This is annoying but harmless.
- The board was poorly designed and experiencing crosstalk somewhere on the bus (trace signals interfering with each other) and the sound card is picking it up and playing it through the speakers.
- The inverter for the LCD screen is failing or has coil whine (or both.)
- Wires for the CCFL backlight have shorted, resulting in a tiny electrical arc of high voltage whenever the backlight is on (I've seen this happen, destroyed the inverter.)
It could also be something more bizarre like a lifted pin on an IC arcing to the motherboard, but that's extremely rare.
