This stupid EU Directive is currently enforced here in Sweden too. Except they only store if for 6 months. Our government blamed that they'd have to pay fines if they didn't implement the law. But the fact is, the fines is barely even a fraction of the cost of maintaining and setting the system up. And it was implemented in Germany before. But it showed to only help in less then 1% when finding criminals. The saying "If you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to hide" is bullshit. Sure, I might not have anything to hide but that doesn't mean I want the government to violate my privacy. And lets not forget, that no system is foolproof. There will be stored information that if comes into the wrong hands can be devastating.
