• Going from AMD 1055T to 2500K or 2600K

Im deciding whether to get rid of my 1055T and get a 2500K or 2600K. But is this actually worth it, the reason im doing this is because my 1055T isnt as powerful as id hoped (a mistake getting an AMD IMO), and quite a few game perform badly. Now it it worth it to get a 2500K or 2600K My main use will be gaming (95%) Then fraps recording, how will hyper threading effect fraps? I also do a tiny bit of video editing, like 1 short film every 2-3 weeks with some special effect. I have 2 6970's in crossfire. So, is it worth me getting a 2500k or a 2600K. Is getting a 2600K worth the extra $100?
Ivy Bridge is coming pretty soon, and looks fairly promising, so just hold out for one or two more months.
Wait for Ivy, It is coming out in April afaik. You can still be with the 1055T, but it might be the bottleneck right now. If you do not want to wait, get the 2500k, you had some nice cooler too, didn't you?
Meh only if you do massive rendering I would get the 2600k. Also how is the 1055 underperforming? Does it reach 100% continuously? They seem to perform almost the same: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/Cinebench-11.5-Multi-threaded,2407.html
Games are not using all the cores. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/Gaming-Left-4-Dead-2,2433.html For a gaming one

Yes GTA iv may be poorley made, but it is one of my favorable games to play, i keep getting kicked all the time due to "your comptuer is running too slowly"

BRT has an i7 2600k and 2x GTX580 3GB and it still runs pretty poorly for that hardware.

This will also get me a better motherboard since my AMD one is shitty. Yes i do have a corsair h50, so i should be able to overclock quite a bit [editline]10th January 2012[/editline]
GTA IV is really fucking picky about your hardware. Itll cost way too much. I could get an ivy bridge next year when the prices drop
your GTA problems are because of your videcards, when I have crossfire enabled the game runs like utter shit, with it off a solid 40fps. running a 1055t @3.5ghz and Crossfire 6950's

The price of IB will barely be affected by the fact we're on an island. It's the same deal with Sandy bridge, the price difference between Au and US is negligible.

When the 2500K becomes outdated i could then get an ivy bridge. Although that may be a while
Atleast wait until Ivy bridge, 1055T is still more than capable, I'll be keeping my 1090T until atleast 2013.
Overclock it.
Overclock it.
definetly [editline]12th January 2012[/editline]
Atleast wait until Ivy bridge, 1055T is still more than capable, I'll be keeping my 1090T until atleast 2013.
i dont want to wait this long. And the ivy bridge CPUs will probably be very expensive. since quite a few of them are using 1155 i could always get one at a later date

They have already released the pricing. A goddamn google search will show this. If you wait for Ivy Bridge and for some reason they are too expensive there will be an obvious price drop for SB. Just wait.
What clock speed are you running at, the stock 2.8 is too slow and you need to overclock it. I have mine running at 3.5 without any voltage increase
What clock speed are you running at, the stock 2.8 is too slow and you need to overclock it. There is still an increase in performance and you would be mad not to over-clock it.
GHZ barely matter anymore, Anything 2.6 and higher is fine with todays modern games and applications, yes with higher GHZ everything runs faster but surely if you can wait the extra 1 - 1000 seconds it wont kill you.
why would you not want to boost your PC speed for free?
I'm saying 2.8 ghz isnt too slow and that he doesnt NEED to overclock.
of course he doesn't need to. There's just no reason not to.
I'm saying 2.8 ghz isnt too slow and that he doesnt NEED to overclock.
But i want to overclock. I like to get the best performance i can get out of my computer
But i want to overclock. I like to get the best performance i can get out of my computer
Well then you can overclock, I was just telling james that you dont NEED to overclock.
of course he doesn't need to. There's just no reason not to.
Doesn't overclocking reduce your CPU's lifetime? Unless you plan to use it short term, I can see reasons for not overclocking.
Doesn't overclocking reduce your CPU's lifetime?
If you can't properly cool it, yes.
Doesn't overclocking reduce your CPU's lifetime? Unless you plan to use it short term, I can see reasons for not overclocking.
Maybe it'll shorten it from 15 years to 10 years, I think your processor will be near useless in terms of speed by the time overclocking kills it.
My 1055T cant even pull 30 FPS on GTA iv, no matter what settings its on. Disable all 'smart' and 'power management' bullshit and try again.
of course he doesn't need to. There's just no reason not to.
Even with proper cooling, it will reduce the life. Think about it: if you ramp up the clock speed, the voltages in the processor are changing that many mHz more frequently. That means it will go through more clock cycles for the same amount of time. Each logic device in the processor can go through a number of clocks, so it will fail sooner than it would have at a lower frequency. Nowadays, it's not a problem because by the time it would have failed you would have upgraded already.
