Alright, So ive been having this problem with my computer for a few months now, and I still cant fingure it out. At first I thought it was the video card b/c it was hitting 80C, so i got that replaced. Got it back, tried again, and yet again, its hitting 80s before it freezes up. So now im not too sure what it could be next. I check my motherboard and its really hot too, so im not too sure whats up with that. Ill figure out the temp for that after im done posting this.
Specs are
XFX nForce 780i 3-Way SLI Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.86GHz
Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2
Seagate 500GB Hard Drive/ 1TB Hard Drive
EVGA e-GeForce GTX280 SC 1024MB
Windows 7 64Bit
Corsair 650Watt
any suggestions?
Download and run Speed Fan, post your temps: http://www.almico.com/speedfan440.exe
Speed fan has been known to be unreliable with temps. Use HWMonitor.
-snip I misread-
Alright, well i use HWMonitor. and i got these temps as it was frozen
GTX 280: 73 C
nForece 780i: CPU 53 C
Mainboard 38 C
So, by these temps, im guessing its not really a temp problem. But im gunna go back to the basics and try some stuff out, see if it really is the new RAM i got
Those are high. Are you getting enough cool air through there?
Should be enough, i got the Gigabyte 3D Aurora
Those are high. Are you getting enough cool air through there?
No they aren't.
OP those temps are fine. Check out your new RAM for sure as it is probably the problem.
I did that too. Took the new RAM out and just left the original 2GB of RAM that i got with the PC in, beat half or portal to finally see the new ending and everything seemed fine. The max temp i got was about 74C. So im gunna try the new RAM next.
Here is a MUCH better question. What is your driver firmware #? The newest 196.75 drivers have been linked to overheating.
roll back (or download) 196.21 drivers!

when they released those drivers, my video card was on its way back from eVGA. when i got it in my computer i checked for driver updates, and i found that out.
80 degrees is fine for a gpu.
Are those temps you posted during load?
yea, the ones at the top of the page are the ones that i was running with the old and new RAM. So from what ive been testing, ive found its the new RAM that ive been having problems with. Now i just have to figure out why the RAM is not working properly.
Download Memtest86+ to make sure its the ram giving you problems.
alright, ill have to try that when i get home from school.
Download Memtest86+ to make sure its the ram giving you problems.
err... not too sure how to use this Memtest86
Download the prebuild iso, burn it, boot from it
I have a 680i Motherboard and I have noticed that the way the chipset fan is mounted, it blows right onto the GPU in my computer. Not sure about the 780i though.

yea... i guess ill have to do it that way, now i gotta find some cd's
and..

yea, its pretty much the same with the 780i too.

Yeah, so remove the fan and see what happens. It blows all the hot air from the CPU onto the GPU.
I think i figured it out. I took all the RAM out and put the old RAM in the 2 left slots and the newer RAM in the 2 right slots. I played Bioshock for about 20min or so and it seemed to work fine. And i also did a memtest and it said that there was no problems. So i dont know what is going on with the RAM, but it seems to be working fine now.
