This sometimes happens when I use preview

Sometimes the menu bar goes black too, is there any way to fix this? This computer is kind of old so that might be the problem.
What version of OSX are you using?

I can't really say unless I used safe mode regularly, it doesn't always happen.
Run Disk Utility > Verify Disk (Not permissions, that's useless) and see how that goes. If it's intermittent, I'm thinking an app may be occasionally screwing with Dock/SystemUIServer.
