Ok I wanna hook internet up To 2 computers But I only have a modem with 1 ethernet so Could I hook my computer up to the other computer Then Buy a pci ethernet card and plug 1 computer to the internet and share the connection over the other computer?
A router wold work decently too I think. That's what i have here.
What you need is a router.
I know but would I be able to do that this way and save 15 bucks?
Yes, that would work. You can set up a bridged connection or use internet connection sharing. However, using a router is the best way and they aren't very expensive. [editline]06:11AM[/editline] If price is an issue, you could probably find a used one on Ebay or something.
I have tons of old routers collecting dust.
Google "Internet connection Sharing" or "Windows ICS"
If the modem has 1 Ethernet, can't he just buy a cheap 5 port switch and plug both the computers and the modem into that?
No, You need a NAT, most ISPs only give you one IP and as such one computer will connect and the other one will just fail to get an IP. Routers are t a basic level a NAT plus a Switch, In reality they've crammed so many extra routing features in there.
