Why do they have to push a billion particles in every fighting move you make? I don't think it looks that pretty and it would wear off fast if you had these particles all the time
hdr lens flair 100000%
It would look much cooler if they toned it down a lot.
Some of the fire looks neat, but the other crap is just annoying, wouldn't it be distracting in battle or whatever?
Can't See Shit: The Game
Looks a lot harder to see with the physx. All the particles fill up the screen.
I think it looks nice, but I wouldn't care if I had PhysX on or not.
Would be great with adjustable settings
I'm actually a little confused about PhysX, I used to see all these amazing tech demos long ago. They were all about realistically breaking wood, jelly structures reacting realistically, metal bending, actual liquid simulation... Things like that. (Or am I associating videos with PhysX that weren't actually PhysX related?) It seems that most games that actually use PhysX mostly use just some kind of particles. Either glowing particles in the air or some kind of debris particles. The particles here look identical to the ones in Planetside 2, and while it does look pretty, I'm not really a fan of it. It looks distracting and too bold. But I guess it's just because it really takes a lot to actually run those simulations.

Basically, they were creating a physics engine that was capable of all those things. The end goal of such an engine was to sell their own hardware. It was basically a PCI slot processing card dedicated to processing the physics stuff. Nvidia bought them out, and offloaded the processing onto their GPUs. The problem is that instead of using PhysX for something useful, they just use it as a marketing gimmick. It's why all the particle effects are so ridiculously overdone. There's no way you could justify the gimmick unless it's so obscene and in your face all the time.

Has science gone too far?
I notice that a lot of current games seem to use PhysX incorrectly by just adding mindless particles without making sense to them. One game I think of that implements it very nicely though was Batman Arkyham Asylum. I haven't played Arkham City yet though to see if it's the same there.

Which just makes me think of what a massive shame it is to see PhysX go to waste every time I see a video like this. It could've been so much more. Something that affects gameplay in great ways with destruction and all. But instead nvidia made it exclusive to their gpus so now devs can't use PhysX properly without cutting out the AMD playerbase. Hence, the supposedly pretty and overdone particles instead of something actually useful and fun.
that looks terrible

It seems whenever a developer implements PhysX they go totally overboard with it just to make it seem worthwhile.
How the fuck is a bunch of particles in any way related to physx? It's not like they have to remove them entirely with physx disabled just because they can't have collisions on them. Obvious nvidia propaganda

I'm still waiting for a game that implements all this stuff
Most of those were probably videos of DMM.
Thanks, a quick search found exactly one of the videos I was thinking of. [editline]20th March 2013[/editline] Above post, too [editline]20th March 2013[/editline] Oh, the above post is actually just a longer, better version of what I found...
It's because without physx they would take a lot more processing power to render.
Physx makes no difference to the ability to render thousands of particles flying out of something in fancy patterns. All physx allows is for them to stop when they hit floors/walls rather than passing through, which is very computationally intensive. The fact that they just remove the particles entirely without physx, rather than including them without collisions/physics, pretty much proves that this is an nvidia funded exercise.

PhysX isn't a library for particle effects, it's just a physics library like Havok or Bullet except you can offload computations to the GPU. As far as I can tell it's the marketing team's fault for confusing everybody - the game is using PhysX in both situations, one is just also using PhysX to add collisions to the particles.
Honestly physX either needs to be the full focus (like in cellfactor) or subtle like in mirro's edge or batman. This overused effect just tends to look meh.

Oh cool, so Nvidia owners will be able to enjoy having their line of sight in this fast-paced competitive shooter cluttered by tiny particles that puts them at a tactical disadvantage against those who have the effects turned off? Appreciate your overboard-implementation of PhysX! Seriously; realism through physics is about the subtleties. All those effects seem to do is add meaningless psychedelic particle swirling. It doesn't even look good for the fire particles.

That game looks stiff and awful, effects aside
I actually turned the bloom off while playing and it became a whole lot more graphically pleasing.
