Let's start a campaign to get people to use the correct aspect ratio first. I'm so sick of seeing everyone I've ever known watch stretched 4:3. :suicide:
You've got to be kidding, every modern TV I've seen has 16:9 on by default
I'm talking about 4:3 signals. Unless it's anamorphic widescreen, having 16:9 on by default is the problem.
Let's start a campaign to get people to use the correct aspect ratio first. I'm so sick of seeing everyone I've ever known watch stretched 4:3. :suicide:
It's even worse when the person has a 73 inch TV, watching standard def, 4:3 stretched to fit.
One expert said poorly set-up TVs made images look "more like a soap opera rather than a Hollywood movie".
Seriously, fuck whoever decided it'd be a good idea to ship TVs with motion interpolation enabled by default.
I'm talking about 4:3 signals. Some members of my family keep watching ugly standard definition 4:3 video on our HDTV and it looks terrible, but for whatever reason they don't seem to notice the incredibly obvious quality difference.
Seriously, fuck whoever decided it'd be a good idea to ship TVs with motion interpolation enabled by default.
Worse still when some people don't understand that they're seeing motion interpolation, or don't see the difference between having it enabled/disabled.

Who ever thought allowing phones to record vertically was a good idea? When it's uploaded to YouTube, it's a sliver of the screen.
I thought they were going to talk about people doing this

I support this ok.
While they are at it... GET SOME FUCKING VOLUME EQUALIZATION ON ADVERTS. *whisper whisper rustle* "We will return after a short commercial break" "HI I'M BARRY SCOTT AND THIS IS CILLIT BANG!"
that's done on purpose to make you pay attention to the ads
Because of this I took the time to change my TV settings when nobody in my family was around, fixed all the things I hated (like the 4:3 issue) and nobody in my family noticed at all. Success.
While they are at it... GET SOME FUCKING VOLUME EQUALIZATION ON ADVERTS. *whisper whisper rustle* "We will return after a short commercial break" "HI I'M BARRY SCOTT AND THIS IS CILLIT BANG!"
My tutor told me that the reason adverts are like that is the over compression they use to make everything sound as loud as possible without clipping. It is to gain the attention of the person watching the TV.

GET SOME FUCKING VOLUME EQUALIZATION ON ADVERTS. *whisper whisper rustle* "We will return after a short commercial break" "HI I'M BARRY SCOTT AND THIS IS CILLIT BANG!"
It's like that because ad-makers can ramp the audio compression up the butt because they don't need to preserve dynamics, unlike the movie where careful handling of loudness differences is more important.
Letterbox CRT is where it's at
I'd rather have stretched image then black borders
I'd rather have shit quality than perfectly tolerable borders
ftfy
I have 4 tv's in my home and they are all 4:3...laptop is 16:9 and desktop monitor is 16:10... Buying 16:9 tv would be useless cause cable operator is still sending analog 4:3 signal...
I don't understand how people can stand widescreen for computers. Televisions I can understand, because of the distance one sits from the tv set.
I don't understand how people can stand widescreen for computers. Televisions I can understand, because of the distance one sits from the tv set.
flip it 90degrees. OH WOW, ALL THAT TEXT!! Besides most games are better in widescreen than 4:3
It should be made law to cap the volume of adverts below that of TV programs.
It is actually. It just hasn't gone into effect yet. In 2014 it will iirc.
do your eyes only see 60 degrees of vision or something?
No, my vision is fine. I just prefer a more immersive field of view when I am playing games using a display that is physically closer to my face.
No, my vision is fine. Well, I suppose that's one strategy...
So instead of having a screen that covers more of your field of view you sit closer to the monitor? Well, I suppose that's one strategy...
You have it backwards, because I sit closer to the screen, I require one that better covers the field of view. Space is a constraint where I currently have my computer set up, I can't just move the monitor around as I please.
No, my vision is fine. I just prefer a more immersive field of view when I am playing games using a display that is physically closer to my face.
I had a 4:3 monitor for about 4 years. Switched to HD 1080p one. Never again 4:3. The increased field of view is so much better for both work and gaming. I can't stand 4:3 any more, it just feels like a square, which is very unnatural. Widescreen also covers more FOV so sitting close to screen makes it almost fit in my line of sight as with 4:3 either sides will show wall or I won't properly see top and bottom.

It's just a preference I have, completely inconsequential to you in every way.
It should be made law to cap the volume of adverts below that of TV programs.
in the US this was made a law quite recently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_Advertisement_Loudness_Mitigation_Act
