And be forced to solder on a SATA cable when the USB side dies. Nah.
And be forced to solder on a SATA cable when the USB side dies. Nah.
Rip it out of it's case and throw it into a new one? Why even bother trying to make a cable for it when there are easier options. Plus do you really have a need to have eSATA all the time because unless I am at home, I have yet to see another computer with that port.

The disk itself is USB, so you can't just open i t up. Seagate doesn't do this so the drive inside can be used for whatever. Also for anyone wondering this is not actually a WD Black, that's just the color of the casing.

Why the hell did WD waste their time doing that. It is not like you are going to notice a difference in the end. At this point they should just be ditching 3.0 and throwing 3.1 on everything and giving out custom cables that let you go from type-c to micro-b ss or just straight up type-c.

A 2.5" HD will only put out maybe 1Gbps total. USB TypeC, certainly. And I don't know why they do it, I imagine it possibly lets them make it smaller, use less power, or maybe be cheaper. But then again, the drives and the USB bridges are made en masse, so I don't imagine the bottom line is that much lower. The cost of having separate parts made has its own downside.

Does not matter if it can transfer the data at full speed, transfer full power, or whatever. This is more of reliability of the port as it is actually part of the board.
why not buy a hitachi 2tb drive and a case of your choice for less than $70
why not buy a hitachi 2tb drive and a case of your choice for less than $70
Probably because you can't get a 2tb 2.5" hard drive of any remotely reputable model for $70.
why not buy a hitachi 2tb drive and a case of your choice for less than $70
Externals are very often cheaper than the sum of their parts.

Still not a bad deal and if something does happen the warranty will cover it. 98% of people wouldn't even bother with opening it up and reusing the drive if it would be even possible in the first place.

And sometimes it dies suddenly, which normally you can just pull the drive and get your data.

I was really hoping for a decent external WD Black hard drive for once. (As in the type, not the color of the case[Why label it like that??]) Wanted to buy an external black one for the reliability and to plug it into a Raspberry Pi and setup a NAS or something, instead of putting out for a real NAS drive bay. Those things are usually so much more expensive than high-density hard drives themselves, which hurts me on the inside a little. Oh well, guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and invest in a real drive bay.
