So the processor that came with my machine fits a [U]Socket AM2 (940)[/U]. I want to buy a better processor that will fit this socket.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ is the fastest I can find but where could I buy one.
Ebay is your only option. Not worth it imo, wait until you have ~$200 for a new motherboard and CPU.

I suppose a used processor would be an unwise decision?
Not necessarily, you just won't be seeing as huge amounts of performance boosts as you would with saving a bit more for a full upgrade.
What GPU do you have?
