Loadouts? In a Quake game?
Why? Genuine question. Why would they do that?
What weapons would be in the loadouts anyway? How would that work in a Quake game?
I think I'll stick to Quake 3 and Open Arena for now.
so it looks like the leaked patchnotes from a couple of weeks back were true.
shit sucks, considering "classic" is now behind a paywall if you want to host it.
"One step closer to a modern shooter". I'm pretty sure the reason people play Quake is because they prefer it to "modern shooters".
An update like this. Sure this isn't a desperate attempt to earn some money?
For the weapon loadouts, like the article states :
Primary weapons : Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun and Railgun.
Secondary weapons : Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Plasmagun and Machinegun
Players may now hold jump to continuously jump.
Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed.
What have you fucking done.
Still can't fucking play a private match friends without paying monthly subscription. oh p.s, they also need a monthly subscription if you want to play with more then 3.
What have you fucking done.
What people have been doing with macro'd keybinds for years. I'd be far more concerned about something like auto rocket-jump where the real meat of Bhopping is.
But yeah, below that - The fuck am I reading? Why did this change in direction come? Is Bethesda this desperate for milking dosh out of everything after how hard TESO crashed and burned?
Its optional and for select game modes only.
I really hope that servers have the ability to not play with any of the new stuff, because these completely fuck with how quake 3 plays from what I know about quake.
It says heavy machine gun, rocket launcher, lightning gun, rail gun for primaries, shotgun, grenade launcher, plasma gun, machine gun for secondaries. I'd imagine this would probably be put into ctf or clan arena.
To be perfectly honest, this update seems really poorly thought out, considering that global ammo pickups and 5 second gun respawn time completely fucks up the concept of map control which is a big part of Quake 3
Seems kinda odd for a Quake game.
So is this a good time to get into Quake?

Considering those patchnotes.
Hell No.

Is it going F2P and when is it releasing? Google won't tell me.

Technically F2P but you miss out on basic features every FPS in existence has if you don't pay monthly.
We can probably do without loadouts, thank you very much. Isn't the whole point of Quake-style arena shooters that you run around with smaller arms at the start then pick up the big guns where you can find them? The keyboard has more than enough buttons for equipping weapons, there's a line of number keys right above the letter keys big enough for 10, maybe even 12 weapons to be equipped with a single press!

Depends which gamemodes you play. I used to jam with a whole bunch of hardcore players and we'd play Rocket Arena pretty often. Limiting yourself to a few weapons would add a sense of specialisation and add a little pre-match strategy to looking at what your opponent is good at and trying to counter with an appropriate playing style

not sure how effectively you could macro strafe jumping though, given the precise angles you need to use and alter based on your speed and whether or not you want to turn
Adding easy mode bunnyhop speed increases is awful
[editline]28th August 2014[/editline]
although please bear in mind all of these changes (beyond a few global fixes) can be turned on or off by the host
I thought this was a joke at first...damn.

Creating/using an autohopping macro is a really bad thing to do, since holding down the jump button will actually slow you down slighty, compared to if you hit jump right as you land. This autohopping feature takes all of that away.
I will definitely only be playing on classic servers, the new hopping physics just ruins the game IMO.
People play quake-live, to play quake, not to play what-ever you guys think a good fps is like.
Fork the game if you want to create something that ins't quake.
rip ql
the fact that they're adding timers above the item spawns is pretty sickening.

I haven't played Quake, but what exactly is bad about this? Is it a complete physics change or just a quality-of-life controls change for new players?
StarSiege Tribes required you to spam the spacepar to "ski" - the game's equivalent to bunnyhopping, an originally unintended physics glitch - but was changed to simply holding down spacebar in the sequels, which made them significantly more user friendly; pros were still faster as they could find optimal ski paths, while newbies weren't totally left in the dust like they are in other fast paced games with bunnyhopping.
They fucked it up.
Guess I'll be heading to UT then.

And we see your problem within the first four words.
dont worry in 1-6 months when the userbase has left they'll put it back to what it was

If you read the article you'd notice that the classic mode is still being retained and this new stuff is optional...
this update is so gross
Someone said that it was basically behind a paywall though?
Like I said before I haven't kept up with Quake Live in a long time so I'm having to dig through a lot of stuff to get to the bottom of it.
Can anyone else iterate on that?
[editline]27th August 2014[/editline]
If they aren't going to basically keep what Quake is behind any price tag then this isn't as much of an issue.
If the classic mode was behind a paywall, then this stuff wouldn't be optional. But as the article clearly states, new mode is optional.

Been playing for a number of years and these updates don't sound bad to me with the exception of the weapon loadout feature, but that is apparently for a separate game mode so its not a big deal. Some of these features are already in a Q3 clone called Warsow, which is not referred to as "casual" by any means.
