• How much bottlenecking can I expect?

So my 2 year old XFX Geforce 9800GT has died of overheating yesterday. It was pretty much expected, I knew that the 9800GT's (XFX especially, since mine is a single-slot card) had issues with overheating, and running at 70*C while idle... well, it was frustrating but not much of a shock. Anyway, I'm in the market for a new GPU, and I'm looking at the GTX 460. I'm a little strapped for cash, I only have about $50 that I was saving for Portal 2 and very little income, so this is the most I'm willing to spend to future-proof my rig. Aside: Why does the GTX 460 come in both 192-bit and 256-bit? It's a little bit dumb, to say the least. I'd probably go with the ASUS GTX 460 with the 256-bit memory and 1GB, since that seems to be the most value at $229. Anyway, on to the real question. My CPU/Motherboard is fairly old, and I haven't upgraded both in the five years that I've had this computer. I'm also expecting it to be cramped, since my case is MicroATX. But how much performance lost can I expect with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.0GHz)? Or rather, how much performance can I expect to gain over the 9800GT? As long as it's substantial enough, that's fine. I'm running a Geforce 6150LE right now, so I'll go crazy without my dual monitors and games that were released in the last decade. Specs: AMD Athlon X2 3800+ (2.0GHz Dual Core) 4GB OCZ RAM, DDR2 some hard drives OCZ StealthXStream 500W PSU Geforce 6150LE, formerly 9800GT. 20.5" LCD + 15" LCD.
How much bottlenecking CAN'T you expect? :smug:
funny you ask that, that's one of the reasons the 460 is memory bottlenecked yeah it would be bottlenecked pretty badly
Gts 450
I have a 9800GT, which run's in the low 30's... I don't get why yours was anywhere near 70.. and yeah there's gonna be one hell of a bottle neck
Dude, my 9800GT was notorious for overheating. About a week before it failed (after keeping it for 3 years) it would BOOST for 70C idling then artifact on desktop.
Gts 450
Yeah, I know about the 450. I'm planning on upgrading the whole works later in the future (processor, motherboard, RAM, case) so if I spend a little bit extra now, then I get more performance in the future without having to upgrade the GPU again to take advantage of it. Thanks, though.
I have a 9800GT, which run's in the low 30's... I had one of the XFX ones, single slot, so it's understandable why mine got such ridiculous temperatures.
I dunno if this helps you at all, as I don't really know a whole lot about GPU's, And if this is relevant, it has 2x DVi ports at the back.

why would he bake it? His card works fine.
It was a quistion coined on OP.
so use line breaks to separate
I have a 9800GT, which run's in the low 30's... I don't get why yours was anywhere near 70..
My PNY 9800GT was always running at high temps just like OP's. About 65*C idle and 80 under full load. One time it hit 105*C. I'm surprised it still works. Anyways, turns out that my old PC case just had really shitty cooling so I bought a better case and *bam* problem solved.
I haven't tried baking it yet. Gonna try that this weekend. Also, what's the difference between the 768MB, 192-bit 460 and the 1GB, 256-bit 460? I don't need the extra memory, since my screenres is only 1440x1050, but is the faster memory interface really worth $70 more on the total price?
it performs better regardless of resolution, the 256 bit bus on the 1GB version is just there to accommodate for the larger amount of memory
so use line breaks to separate
Sorry, dad. I've failed you for the last time.
An AMD 3800+, Shit those things are old. And you want to get a 460?
An AMD 3800+, Shit those things are old. And you want to get a 460?
He already knows there is going to be a bottleneck, he just wants to know to what extent.
I had a single core 3800+ sooo....it sucked. Can they even overclock well? Mine got up to 2.6GHz just fine, but like I said mine was a single core.
An AMD 3800+, Shit those things are old. And you want to get a 460?
Still going to upgrade all the other parts, the graphics card upgrade was merely a necessity.
