Internet of Shit strikes again!
"As we have advised... all systems - especially internet-connected ones - must be configured with security in mind.
Or just do not connect them to the internet in the first place?

I think it is more "I am a lazy engineer and instead of designing the controller with its own harness, electrical interface and signalling protocol (because who uses existing protocols and standards??) we just snap in an ethernet module and tunnel through that from the controller to the host computer."
The downside is that unless explicitly instructed not to, with ethernet looking like ethernet it's cheaper to just plug into your existing switch/router than running a new line in an air gap.

Is ethernet even safe for real-time applications? It doesn't sound like the actuators here have local safety interlocks (which they really should..).
