Has anyone had experience with these or a similar products? I was thinking of using some rather than a wireless card for my desktop.
I've had experience with both Powerline kits, and TP-Link's products (but not TP-Link's Powerline products).
TP-Link's networking products are pretty solid, they're pretty great budget networking gear that'll do what you need in a home environment.
As for the Powerline kits, our house is fairly old and the wiring is shit, so I maxed out at about 0.4mbps from my desktop to the router (yeah, internal traffic maxed at 0.4 :/). If you're living in a fairly modern house then you'll probably have much better luck, I know a few people who use them with no real problems at all.
Why not go wireless? Is your house made of lead?

Well that or rebar'd concrete.
That's basically like a faraday cage.
Otherwise just get a router that transmits at the legal power limit and better antenna('s) for it.

No kidding, I knew a guy who lived in a house like that.
He'd get about 90% packet loss on the second floor while the router was on the first floor.

A friend of mine live in a apartment that's constructed out of that.
Needless to say he had to get creative with routing CAT5 cables, especially since drilling in reinforced concrete is a nightmare.
So that included cables going out of one window and in of another.
Having a concrete house would be pretty awesome, except for that.
The reason why I asked btw was as a resort if a wireless card didn't get the job done right.
I'll be grabbing this http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-WN951N-Advanced-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B001811NCO/ref=sr_1_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1325612441&sr=1-9
cheers anyways

I can say that my little experience with internet over power has been awful.
My brother worked for at&t at the time of our uverse being installed, so he grabbed the best unit at the time for providing such service and is still using it. Whenever i hop on his computer for whatever, the enternet is slow as balls, and it drops constantly. Just trying to watch FP videos, you have to let it load for 5 minutes to watch a 4 minute video.
We have 18 down, and I have a beautiful connection in my room, which is hardwired, btw.
I bought these a few weeks ago : http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Networking/Network+Accessories/Powerline+Adapters/TP-Link+200Mbps+AV200+Mini+Multi-Streaming+Powerline+Adapter+Starter+Kit+%5BTL-PA211KIT%5D+?productId=43449
my experience with these has been phenomenal. Easy set-up, great connection speed, and there not really that expensive. Over WiFi I would be getting 0.5/0.7 MB but over the power line im getting easy 18/20 MB. Plus the connection never drops out.
The only thing you have to make sure is that the power lines are on the same fusebox as some houses are wired differently (upstairs has one fusebox downstairs has another) its very rare to see this now but sometimes homes haven't been re-wired since they were built (older houses). But they are well worth the investment if you have a poor WiFi signal/poor connection.
I would most definitely recommend them
TP-Link has bad drivers, lots of drop outs and sometimes it just disables itself. Many dropped packets too.
