If you enjoy city builders and management games, there's absolutely no reason for you not to own this game. It brings a life or death aspect that simply isn't present in most offerings of the genre. The base game is good on its own but the modding community adds some impressive depth and complexity.
While I haven't played this, it has to be something significant if Chinese "free" to play city builders are trying to pass footage of this off as footage of their game.

Banished was fun, but I always remembered it lacking any real "progression" outside of being able to feed a larger amount of villagers.. I'm VERY surprised to see it listed at 20$ off sale.

I have a friend who recommended some mods to me and not even a lot of them. The core gameplay stays the same but you can easily add hundreds of new types of food and materials and new buildings to process those materials which get turned into other new materials. Basically, there are a massive amount of different ways to build a working economy and trade.
Actually the MegaMod is a whole little expansion pack for the game. If it's too much, the colonial charter mod is good enough to add a lot of extra gameplay to the game.
When I bought it I played it for three hours and marked it as "finished" since I saw almost everything the game has to offer. I found it surprisingly shallow and overrated. I haven't tried mods though.
I recommend paying a bit more and buying Rimworld instead.
