Avast! is fine. You can get MSE. But have you tried reinstalling? Or maybe you have force-closed some part of avast! or won't let it run on boot? Some service maybe?
The problem is you're using avast the free version. Either use AVG (free version works a treat) or actually go and pay for an AV (and no not Norton).

For some reason, avast flips out when your updating it and it either crashes when doing so, or you reboot while updating.... I used to get this all the time, its no biggie, just reinstall it. Edit: Also, the only down side to the service not running is that you don't have a real time protection running. If you ARE concerned, just do a manual scan, and if you are SUPER tinfoil hat paranoid, run malware bytes over your system.
Well I think that you could reboot the computer then it would solve the problem, if that does not work then reinstall Avast from a fresh download.
Check if the necessary Avast service is still running on your computer. Happened to me once, but restarting the computer fixed it. Somehow the Avast service had not started when I first turned on the computer.
