Can I upgrade to legal windows 7 from a pirated version of vista? (Mods read instead of banning on s

So my PC used to have Vista 64-bit home premium installed legally ever since I got it from cyberpower. Then it broke and my uncle's buddy installed a pirated version of vista 32-bit business. I didn't realize it was pirated until I started paying attention to my lack of a desktop background, then I saw the little thing in the bottom right corner saying "blabla pirated". So now I've got a windows 7 upgrade-only legal version from PC world. I'm wondering if I can install this over the bootleg version my uncle's buddy installed, or will it detect that it's pirated and screw up?

Oh shit, pirated version just rebooted and now it's saying Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt. Status: 0xc000000f
File: \windows\system32\config\system
Welp, now I HAVE to use this upgrade copy, or return it and fork out extra for standalone w7.
I want to say your best bet is to just do a clean install. If I remember right, it will make backups of the old computer files in the form of putting everything in one folder some where. So you should be able to recover some files. Also I'm pretty sure that upgrade only doesn't exist, I have a windows 7 box right next to me, and it says upgrade all over it. But I had used it to overwrite Windows XP.
Excuse my bad reading, it should not be able to detect a pirated install and just go normally. Should though, you never know some times.
The girl at the sales counter said something like "you can get a full standalone version for £130" however so I'm not sure

Also, will it go over an install with that 0xc000000f error?
Does your PC have a vista sticker anywhere on it with the code? If so, just get a Vista Home Premium 64 bit ISO and install it with the key then do the upgrade.
Wait, how much did you pay exactly for that upgrade copy?

Just bought standalone w7, upgrade didn't work but this guy at PCW was cool about it.
