• What processors are compatible?

I'm running a Fujitsu Siemens D2461-A2 motherboard, with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ on a AM2 socket on a back-up machine. I want to upgrade the machine to use it for LAN parties, and this single core processor is a little on the light side. I read that AM3 socket processors can be used on an AM2 socket, and that the difference is only added compatibility with DDR3 RAM (using DDR2), but this is a single core processor, can my motherboard support multi-core? How can I find out what processors are compatible? The Fujitsu Siemens website is unhelpful, and I don't have any documentation handy. Any ideas before I go an spend hard-earned money on a new CPU?
as far as I know it's AM2+ that can take AM3 CPUs but I'm not sure and even if it could, since it's an old motherboard, you would probably need to update the BIOS, which you probably can't, since you said that the website is not helpful
