First thread in a LONG time here in FP. Just wondering how do you stay up to date with technology? How do you understand the job market? What advicee could you give others to help them out? mainly I post on Somethingawful's forum but what sites and things do you use?
I personally just Google something if I feel like catching up on something.
I end up with most of my leads for further research from overclock.net.
Oh yeah, Tom's Hardware is a main place I look at.
It depends on what area of technology you're interested in. Websites with specialized interests always have better information in its field than a general website that tries to cover everything like PCMag, CNet, and Wired.
Text / Feeds / Daily visits: Bit-Tech OC3D Neowin WinBeta WinSuperSite Toms Hardware UK Engadget Anandtech ServeTheHome [H] TheInquirer Phoronix Slashdot BBC YouTube: LinusTechTips TekSyndicate TheKnow That gives me a pretty good coverage, though Toms and [H] tend to be a few days behind on reporting.
I usually get my informations from the following sources: * http://www.reddit.com/r/programming * http://www.reddit.com/r/tech * http://www.reddit.com/r/linux * http://www.reddit.com/r/opensource * http://www.reddit.com/r/windows * http://www.reddit.com/r/apple * http://www.reddit.com/r/google * http://www.reddit.com/r/netsec * https://4chan.org/g/ Reddit serves as an efficient place to quickly get up-to-date on the current technology.
How do you understand the job market?
I look at what types of jobs are offered. This gives me a good overview over what is currently being used at corporations. Since I am interested in Sysadmin/Programming jobs, I usually keep an eye out, what kind of tech and programming languages are being used by corporations right now. Currently, in my region, the following IT traits are looked for right now: Sysadmin: * Windows Server knowledge * Citrix and Vmware knowledge * Microsoft Office and Sharepoint Programming: * Java * HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript * .Net * C / C++

I use The Register to stay up to date, suppose more out of interest at this stage (I'm in college at the moment) and also /r/sysadmin on Reddit. Can also just Google it if I'm looking for something in particular.
