Except with a phone contract you're also paying for a service essential for the phone to actually work that isn't free anywhere else. I get the feeling this wont be as popular as it is in the mobile industry.
You're lucky you have some dumb customers who are willing to throw money at you to keep their stuff going.
this is how xbox live should have started
You're paying $160 more for the contract than the standalone bundle
oh whoops misread the article
Doesn't sound all that bad considering you get gold and all that shit thrown in with it.

It's unclear what additional value the $15 subscription would include, but over two years, the "discounted" $99 bundle would end up costing more than just buying the same bundle without the contract. Over two years, the subsidized bundle would cost $459.
You're paying $160 more for the contract than the standalone bundle, and I doubt they would give it enough value to justify that unless they included a lot of Microsoft Points.
Maybe some people don't quite understand; they're selling the hardware for cheap, but then you're forced into a two year contract to pay the monthly fee for those two years to be on Xbox LIVE. However if you just had the hardware without the LIVE, you could still play singleplayer/offline games.
I must have a really conservative mindset but I'd rather pay a larger amount of money for something once and thats it.
