That's what I'd like to do with my life. Level design. Modeling/texturing, animation. But then google started throwing reality in my face. Through research, I seem to have discovered that Game Design degrees generally aren't very good and the industry is very hard to get into. As in, the chances of getting into any of those big, famous companies are extremely low. Only the most talented, extremely dedicated people are successful with that industry. From what I hear, there are literally thousands and thousands of people applying for game design degrees because they grew up playing games just like me, but the majority are unsuccessful getting the career they dreamed of afterwards. So, wat do?
If you really want to I say go for it but be sure that you have something to fall back on. For instance you may want to dig into software development as a backup plan.
Yeah it's shit hard. It's like dreaming of becoming a rockstar. But yeah, it's not impossible. You could always start your own company. Minecraft was made by like one guy.
The thought of making my own company has crossed my mind... The problem is finding skilled people who would be willing to take the chance to work with me and invest in making said games.
Not if you pay them.

DO NOT do a game design degree, they're worthless. Worse, you waste time you could spend on something useful. If you want to work on videogames do a computer science course and work on mods/independant games. If you're talented and lucky you might get a job. If not, you can always sell the indie stuff you make.
Starting doing out some concept design. Look a lot of the kinda stuff you'd like to model, be it props or.. weaponry for games, even hats. Not copying, but doing all kindsa shapes. Makes me wonder if you can become good at this while sitting on your ass at home. I'd guess so, with some rocking RAM I bet. Then do more concept designs, some on paper, then the modeling softwares and shit. It's supposedly good to have a picture on the side giving you the idea when you mold the models you know. If you turn out to be really good at that, like it's the thing you wanna do, you'll have some convincing work piling up in no time! So you better have someone (intellectual) to review your shit. Oh right, the college too.
