Could also be you are running on top of shit commodity hardware and software with loopholes.
The whole "loophole" is moot though, because this is a system without authentication in the first place and it's not used to route ships either. This is just a proximity warning system and the devices on the ships communicate directly, which means you can't deactivate the warning, just create one and only if you go near these ships. Even then it's only used in conjunction and not as replacement for radar, which means there's no issue here, at all. The thing they're manipulating from a distance is just the service by some third-party provider that lets you follow ships from your home computer.
