So I was playing HoI3 when I alt tabbed out of the game my computer encountred a error and had to reset when it did I got "Windows cannot startbecause Hal.dll is missing/corrupt and needs to be replaced". Before you go "JAY DEE BEE use your Xp installation disc" My Cd drive doesnt work. Yes I have googled this and they just said use your Install disc.
Not much to do without a XP disc.. You need to enter the recovery console on the CD and do a CHKDSK /R, maybe even copying the HAL.dll manually from the i386 folder.. Alternatively you could make a bootable XP USB and use that instead of a CD. If you have a floppy drive, make a bootable floppy and put CHKDSK on it.
Boot into Linux through a flash drive, find a hal.dll from either a disk image, or something similar. Then copy it back into your system32 folder. Should work, as long as it's the right file, and not some shady shit from the net. [editline]09:14PM[/editline] wait, would that work?
Yes it would work... No real need for it to be linux, could just be a MS-DOS floppy, they can be made pretty easily in windows..
Ok I will try the Flash drive Linux doesnt really fit on a 10 mb flash drive
Who the hell still has a 10mb flash drive :gonk:
Who the hell still has a 10mb flash drive :gonk:
I have a small 16mb flash drive that came free with an old 128mb flash drive I got a few years back... just gotta find it... Also, hal.dll is Hardware Abstraction Layer, it's how windows interacts with your motherboard and all the devices on it (processor, cd drives, hard drive, graphics cards, etc), your BIOS has a built-in version of HAL, so it can still boot to a CD, windows won't start though because it can't communicate with any other hardware. Your best bet would be to get an install disk and start up the recovery console, then either copy hal.dll from the CD to your computer, or maybe run sfc /scannow to fix any other issues you may have with system files.
