Today while at my friends house I completely dismantled his bricked laptop, and made off with some loot! A floppy drive, a DVD drive, some laptop ram, a tiny fan, a weird laptop heatsink, and a 40GB 2.5" HDD (Yay!)
So now I wanna put this HDD in an external enclosure and use it for carting around files and backups. Problem is I don't know what kind to buy.I looked up the model number (Toshiba MK4018GAP) and it calls it an IDE drive. And then it calls it a ATA-5 drive... I'm not too familiar with these older standards, so I'm a bit confused. Help?
Pics: (Sorry, I know they're way bigger than they need to be but my webcam drivers are bugging out on me and I'm too lazy to resize them in paint.net)

It looks like I could use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182145
If I picked up one of these: http://notebookcables.stores.yahoo.net/44pinmalidc2.html
But with the extra length, I'm not sure the drive would fit in the case.
Does anybody know of any external enclosures that have a male IDE interface?

Picture of the loot, for shits n' giggles.

That end piece should pop off exposing only the pins, then yes that external enclosure should work. Haven't really worked with ATA-5 so you might want a second opinion.

Basically, IDE and ATA/PATA (ATA and PATA are basically the same thing) are extremely similar interfaces, but IDE was the precursor to ATA.
looks like a hard drive that could go in my HDD enclosure.

But IDE is generally the same thing as ATA/PATA.

Oh my god, you're right, I feel like such an idiot right now. With a little prying the end piece came right off.

And thanks for the info on IDE vs ATA/PATA everybody.
