• Mixing RAM?

So I just ordered 4GB of RAM click me, and in my computer I currently have 2 sticks, and I have an extra 2 slots, the current RAM in my computer is 2GB so I was wondering if I could just add this RAM to the other two slots to add up to 6GB, or do I have to remove the old RAM?
Should be fine but probably will run slower because of the mix.
Your memory speed will be same as the slowest RAM module installed in your computer.
Does your mobo support tripple channel?

Sure it's generally safe, but I'd personally rather have 4 GB of matched RAM running at proper speeds than 6GB of two different sizes/speeds/mfr. Just use the 2GB in a new project - make a cheap PC and sell it or something.
Both memory is dual channel and I'm 95% sure both are 800 MHz speed. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] That's weird that it says 400MHz. Maybe it splits it between the two.
Just stick with the 4GB. If you're gaming then 4GB is all you will need for now. If you're video editing... well you'll either get a bit of stutter from the 4GB capacity of ram. Or a shit load of stutter/loading problems, due to the very slow speed of mixing the ram modules. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] Are both your current sticks of ram the same make/model?
Are both your current sticks of ram the same make/model?
Yes. Although I don't do much gaming anymore I do a lot of programming and after my computer upgrades I'm going to hook up my second monitor, I don't know if that will require more RAM to run? I periodically do video editing.
edit: apparantly apple pi == layley, why the alt?
I don't like the username Layley
then why bother logging in to it?
I was banned on this account when I made this thread.
Apparently telling the truth is trolling. Anyways, back on topic.
