• Thinking about buying an Iphone 3GS

It's my 18 birthday in a few weeks and I'm thinking of getting the latest IPhone. I just have a few questions about it. Is it worth it? Is Jailbreaking/Unlocking it really necessary? Is your warranty automatically voided if I Jailbreak/Unlock my IPhone? (It only Comes on O2 here and I much prefer Meteor) Is it ok for everyday use? Is it's weight a big factor? What's the battery life like? Does it have any major/minor annoyances? And simply what's your thoughts on it? I've google'd a few of these answer's but I'm not really satisfied and I'd rather see what Facepunch's opinion is on the device.
1. Yes, the whole App store on it makes it worth it. Once you buy one, you'll find it's more than a phone. It's great for internet. 2. No. 3. Well, kinda. If you jailbreak it and something happens, restore it. But things can go wrong a lot with jailbreaking. It will not void your warranty if you manage to restore it to apple's default before handing it in to the shop. 4. Yes, it is really good and very helpful. 5. Hell no, I dont really know if it's in my pocket or not, seriously... 6. Pretty bad if you use it a lot, for music it can be decent but basically just limit yourself and you will be fine. (May i recommend getting a juice pack thing if you want battery life). Also turn the brightness down n stuff. 7. Nothing much so far, just that you cant send things via bluetooth. (not a big problem). It is really good :L
Is it worth it? Yes, I use mine 20/24 hours of the day. Is Jailbreaking/Unlocking it really necessary? Really, don't buy an iPhone if you're not going to jailbreak it, in my opinion. Is your warranty automatically voided if I Jailbreak/Unlock my IPhone? (It only Comes on O2 here and I much prefer Meteor) M23's response. Is it ok for everyday use?Yes, perfectly fine, see 2 down. Is it's weight a big factor? Not at all. What's the battery life like? If you turn the brightness completely down, use non-intensive apps, turn 3G off (if applicable) off when not needed, and end programs when done, you can max it to the top. Does it have any major/minor annoyances? Minor annoyance is the MMS feature, but AT&T is dispatching that Sept 25 (no idea for O2). Besides for that, I'm happy overall. And simply what's your thoughts on it? I love my to death as if it were a child. Also: YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY GET THIS CASE!!! This is, the best case I have ever used by far on the planet of cases. You can drop this from 4 feet and does no damage what so ever, it's a beast. I don't care if you never follow anything anyone tells you, but this will be the best, if not most beneficial thing you can give your iPhone 3GS. Thanks a million for your responses. I know what I'm getting September 27th! [editline]02:31PM[/editline] And Holy shit that case is BADASS. [editline]02:41PM[/editline] Are there any good guides on Jailbreaking IPhones by the way? I searched around but I really don't trust a 12 year old on Youtube explaining it to me. [editline]03:06PM[/editline] Oh and what Rebel Case did you buy? The normal one or the Serpent?
The incase slider is a good case. You can take the bottom part off so it will fit in the apple docking station without the need of completely removing the case. Edit: Unlike AT&T, O2 already has MMS messaging enabled.

Remember if you take it off O2 you won't get visual voicemail, and you'll need to watch your data usage on another network unless you get a data plan (O2 in the UK give you unlimited data with every iPhone, dunno about Ireland) 4. Defo. Only annoying thing is that the screen goes mental in the rain. I guess the water confuses the touchscreen, but after a wipe it's fine. 5. It's not a noticeable weight for sure 6. If you use it on and off, you'll maybe 2 days out of it. Without using it at all I got 4 days out of it once, but for me every 2 days I charge it 7. I'm still to scared to chuck it about like my old phone. It seems quite sturdy, but I'm not going to test it 8. Best phone I've ever had
7. I'm still to scared to chuck it about like my old phone. It seems quite sturdy, but I'm not going to test it
Yeah, I was like that too until today. I wouldn't give my phone to anyone just in case. But as soon as you get a good study case on it, it's brilliant.
7. I'm still to scared to chuck it about like my old phone. It seems quite sturdy, but I'm not going to test it
I dropped mine from chest height onto a hard floor last week. Not a scratch.
I dropped mine from chest height onto a hard floor last week. Not a scratch.
What case?
What case?
Probably nothing. I find it to be extremely tough even without a protective case. I dropped mine from 3ft onto a marble floor, nothing. Water got directly into the phone via the iP/USB connector, nothing. Not to mention it just feels tough.
You do know, inside the headphone jack there is a piece of water sensitive paper. When this turns a certain colour (blue i think). You will be out of warranty as when you take it to the apple store, they will check it. So be careful.

Got a new 16gb one, as opposed to 8gb. Still haven't got a 3GS though, don't really think it's worth the upgrade. I might get the next one they bring out.
The next one is supposed to be a much bigger update. Wise decision if you have a 3g. If you want an iPhone now and you don't have the 3g, get the 3GS.

Well it's either September or December I can get it so I think I'm going to settle on the 3GS. I don't have a phone right now anyway which is really annoying me.
No, probably next june/july at WWDC is when it will come out (if it is following trends)
so far it has, makes sense to upgrade the iPhone only once a year
What's a good program to convert movies to your IPhone by the way? I used Videora and all my sound is out of Sync.
I use Badaboom from NVIDIA that utilizes my graphics card. Awesome sauce. Can do an hour thirty movie in 20 minutes.
Wait, if I buy an iPhone this week will it come preloaded on 3.1 Firmware with the new baseband?
Wait, if I buy an iPhone this week will it come preloaded on 3.1 Firmware with the new baseband?
I should think so, if not well just update it easily.
I should think so, if not well just update it easily.
Does that not mean I can't unlock it to a different Network then? Or is an unlocker for 3.1 on the way?
I'd wait with buying an iPhone until a complete jailbreak and unlock is out. But (as far as I know) every iPhone got an unlock and jailbreak at some point.
I figured I'd get the 64GB Touch instead. Simply because after realizing how tight on money our family currently is and the fact that if I go to a party and the thing breaks or I lose it I can't afford 140 Euros for Insurance for a year. Maybe if I find a new Job, but with Costs of calls and data today and the fact I also can't afford bill pay right now, I'll stick with my old piece of crap. Still getting the rebel Case though. Thanks Guys.
I actually don't think it was worth it. I paid for my plan and it was simply tiresome, and I hadn't called enough people to see any advantage to throwing $70 a month out the window. I'm less distracted now that I've gotten rid of it, too.
I didn't buy the one with the plan. I got PAYG. Yes, 400 quid for the phone but in the long run you save money. With PAYG (In the UK), you get 12 months free 3G and unlimited browsing. Also, if you top up 20 quid a month you get unlimited texts and about 500 minutes. So it works well without the contract.

And like I said 140 Euros incase the thing get's knicked or broken isn't really affordable. Just gonna go for the touch and get a set of bluetooth headphones as a mic.
