• Phenom II X4 965 Stock Cooler Overclock

Thinking about over clocking a Phenom II X4 965 some but not alot probably to 3.7 or 8 max, would the stock cooler with the pre-applied thermal paste be enough or should I use the stock cooler and arctic silver 5 or just get a aftermarket cooler? I am really aiming to to use the stock cooler for now then in the future get a cooler from newegg and overclock it more.
You could easily hit 3.8 on stock.
You could easily hit 3.8 on stock.
At idle maybe. The stock coolers on the Phenom II x4s are notoriously underrated for the heat output of the Phenom II x4. I built a x4 945 machine for my friend and the thing sounded like a jet engine when under load from not being able to dissipate enough heat. If he plans to do any sort of overclocking, or doesn't want to go insane from the crazy loud fan, I suggest getting an aftermarket cooler.
I got one waiting for me at home, I hope to try for 4ghz on stock the fans on my case are more effective then the fan on my current cooler so I have it on a push pull config.
I personally wouldn't try it without a good aftermarket, but a measly 400MHz OC would be do-able if you're just too poor to afford a new cooler.

I was assuming they're like the Q9 series. I was able to hit 3.6GHz on stock cooler/paste stable with my Q9400.

They're always spectacular overclockers. We're talking about AMD here. You know, the ones that DON'T overclock very well.

I was referring to his 945 in particular, as in his specific chip. The overclocking potential of a CPU that you get has a bit to do with luck; as in, how good your chip is. One of my OCN friends, aaronmonto, got his 945 to 4.2GHz stable because he got a lucky chip. On the other hand, my friend's 5400+ BE can't OC stable past 3GHz no matter what I tried. Learn more about OCing.
You could easily hit 3.8 on stock.
Listen to Odellus. You can easily get a small overclock on any stock heatsink. It's breaking past the 4ghz mark that is the hard part.
