No one wants to watch videos of someone playing a game with the Oculus Rift. It simply does not work. He's describing all of these things yet I can't experience them for myself yet.
Wouldn't the "experiment" work a lot better if you put it on someone else instead?
I got sick after only 10 minutes of playing, I didn't even meet Alyx yet

It doesnt hurt if you do it right.
That doesn't work because I can't stand crossing my eyes for five seconds let alone ten minutes.
Don't cross your eyes like that. It can have severe consequences.
The first thing i did when i reached the airboat (while playing with my Rift) is drive around in circles. My stomach wasn't so happy about my decision, but i stopped in time before puking all over my desk :v:. Also, an alternative for crossing your eyes with these videos is to watch them on your phone/tablet and put them on your face. It's extremely blurry but if you squint your eyes you get an idea how VR feels like.
Instead of crossing your eyes you can "defocus" them (By imagining you're looking past your monitor to something behind them), It gives the same effect but it much easier to maintain.
Instead of crossing your eyes you can "defocus" them (By imagining you're looking past your monitor to something behind them), It gives the same effect but it much easier to maintain.
Which one you have to use depends on how the screens are oriented (same as the offsets or reversed), if you try the wrong one you gets inverse depth.
They should find a way to format the videos to youtubes 3d format
that doesn't work because the images are on the wrong sides.
When you're met with such a coincidence, try both crossing and defocusing. I didn't know the proper turn for the later. Defocusing is how I watched the euro truck sim video and thats why it didnt hurt.
that doesn't work because the images are on the wrong sides.
No there not, the only issue is that there is that video overlay
No there not, the only issue is that there is that video overlay
can I just explain the difference between what you see inside the oculus with what happens when you cross your eyes on oculus imagery if it hasn't been edited specifically for cross-eye viewing if that doesn't explain enough, you end see the wrong eye's information. your right eye becomes your left view and vice versa, rendering impossible shapes in your brain that fold into each other like a multidimensional russian nesting doll instead of just sitting out in open space, as demonstrated somewhat by this 'box sitting on a floor in front of a wall
Which one you have to use depends on how the screens are oriented (same as the offsets or reversed), if you try the wrong one you gets inverse depth.
Yep, for years I had been told to cross my eyes when looking at those magic eye books, then randomly somebody at a bookstore told me to try defocusing them instead, suddenly the images started making sense.
"Look at that!"
now play LCD or a modern simularity with it
I had the chance to try the Rift on HL2 myself. That part where you're walking along the rooftops on those small ledges gave me real vertigo and it wasn't as disorienting as it was downright scary as shit
I had the chance to try the Rift on HL2 myself.
I can't wait to try it on Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Just kidding, I don't have that kind of willpower.
I can't wait to try it on Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Just kidding, I don't have that kind of willpower.
I still haven't even played outlast yet... I'm such a puss.. If you put a piece of paper between your nose and where the lense' connect on the youtube video you can see it a lot better.
I can't wait to try it on Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Just kidding, I don't have that kind of willpower.
I've tried it and let me tell you you don't want to. It gets so scary it's not even fun anymore. Even the rollercoaster demo made my body feel like I was falling out of it. Yes the view is still pixelated but don't forget that your brain has nothing to reference to anymore to perceive as reality (When you look at a monitor you feel some distance between you and the game, because you still know you're sitting in a room)
I can't wait to try it on Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Just kidding, I don't have that kind of willpower.
bought the game and not going to bother playing it until I get the rift for maximum scare.
bought the game and not going to bother playing it until I get the rift for maximum scare.
Make sure to write a will.
You know with Christmas time coming up I'm almost convinced to just go ahead and buy a dev kit early. As apposed to waiting another what, year? For slightly better visuals and slightly better cost? I can hardly wait for this.

It's called a dev kit for a reason. You're free to waste your money but there's people out there that need one and would actually make use of it.
Well I would be using it for development reasons so there's no need to get upset. I'm sure that there are plenty to go around but I'll keep a look out for "Rift shortages for developers caused by inpatient consumers" if it ever becomes a thing. I just don't know if I want to wait for the consumer version because I want the best version since I'd use it for recreation and to dick around too.
If you needed a rift you would have got one already and wouldn't need to ask. Wait for the consumer.
I'm sure that there are plenty to go around but I'll keep a look out for "Rift shortages for developers caused by inpatient consumers" if it ever becomes a thing.
people who bought it on a whim just to have it are the reason it took me and countless other genuine developers near 6 months to get a dev kit for my company. For small game studios this could be the difference between the advantage of having rift compatibility for their release and "we'll be able to play with the rift down the line and will have to shoehorn it into an update" most of these people promptly flooded everything with "wahh the devkit sucks" "wow I'm motion sick and never touching it again" "screendoor effect too stronk it's going to fail" "someone make mirror's edge compatible for me I don't know how to anything" HOWEVER, you're not in the way of most devs-in-need at this point. People who needed it probably have it now. you're wasting your money to pick it up and fiddle around with a few demos, even if you plan on working a bit on developing something. The consumer version will probably cost just as much or less, have far better quality in screen (response time and screen door issues are THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO MOTION SICKNESS IN THE DEVICE), improved sensor, more compact build, lenses fitted properly to the display (improving your FOV ten-fold over the mismatched set right now) could even come with a wireless option, still be useful for development if you're really interested in that, and likely be much more plug-and-play with a lot of software. At this point in time, it's a waste to pick it up in light of talks about a devkit 2.0 (which may even be the consumer version with extra equipment) and the approaching consumer version. The current model is lacking and will leave you feeling sick, it's best off as a utilitarian piece for people who need something to make sure that when the better stuff comes out, their products will be ready. It's your money, yes, but this is my advice.
But it's like Glass. I want it nooooooooooooow :(
