Because despite your violent behavior, the only thing you've managed to break so far, is my heart.
I ask this because most people use CFX/SLI when games have moved on and they're getting bad framerates with their current video card. The thing is though, by that time there are going to be better video cards that support newer versions of OpenGL and DX.
So get a CFX/SLI setup right off the bat or don't get it at all.
Don't try to keep up with OpenGL and DX. It's really not that important.
Crossfire should be considered when you have one decently powerful GPU, a 4870 for example, and you want to upgrade and play newer games better, like Crysis or Metro 2033.
Instead of paying $200+ for a new card more powerful than a 4870, look into buying a second 4870 for $50 less, and you will be able to exceed the power of the single card you were going to buy.

Don't get it right off the bat is what I'm saying.
And only do it with mid-end/high-end cards.
There's nothing more stupid looking than a 4670 crossfire rig.
a single more powerful card is better than two weaker cards

I've also wondered this. Would it be more worth my while to upgrade to a current card, or buy a second GTX 275?
I had two 4850s. I was under the impression that they shitwhipped a 4870.
Not only was I wrong, but with the two 4850's, barely any games ever played without crashing. Crossfire is buggy, and apparently, it's not any better when it comes to performance, because the 4870 runs games better than the two 4850s did.
Before people jump at me, I have a motherboard capable of doing Crossfire, an Asus Rampage Formula, which is an X48 chipset motherboard.

uhh you did something wrong

crossfire isn't worth it unless you have the CPU to cope with it, running a Q9400 @ 4GHz isn't enough for two 4890s and all the extra FPS is just a waste

I did nothing wrong. Only games that worked better were Crysis and FSX. Meanwhile Saboteur, Splinter Cell Conviction, Metro 2033, Cryostasis, Riddick, Arkham Asylum, Penumbra series, Bad Company 2, Hitman series, Assassin's Creed II, and Mirror's Edge all both ran the same and crashed a ton. And I know that both cards were working because both of them would have temperatures of 80-ish after gaming for a while. Going to a 4870 and finding out that all the games worked flawlessly was quite a treat.
And neither of the 4850s were faulty, I probably tried 8 4850's in total to debunk that myth.

sounds like 10.6 drivers

I think 10.4 is around the time I switched to a single 4870. In fact, I'm still using 10.4. Should I upgrade to 10.6 or are there issues with it?

10.6 is garbage, broke CF support in multiple games and dropped single card performance as well

How about 10.5?
How about 10.5?
10.5 is probably the best driver set out right now and 10.7 is being released soon, if 10.4 is working for you I suggest just waiting for 10.7

10.4 works pretty well right now.
As for my GPU, I'm pretty happy with the 4870. Will probably upgrade to a 5 series card after ATi releases their 6 series lineup by the end of the year.
Dual+ card solutions work under the following conditions:
Crunch Intensive work.
Heavy Load games that are correctly written to support the concept.
High resolution monitor set up at consistent frame rates. (1920+, 27"+)
Having a CPU capable of support the load in an efficient fashion.
Maintaining even frames in a locked sync environment.
That said, Fermi scaling is ridiculously awesome (90%+ nominal for the 480) and USUALLY ATI is beginning to get their shit together consistently (10.6 is a mess, do not use it)
Depends on prices and avalibility

Would 460 SLI be bottle necked much by a Phenom II x4 940?

hmm, most likely, not sure
Crossfire/Sli is always a waste of money in the long run.
offtopic: If I want to downgrade my drivers to 10.4 or 10.5, where do I get them?
