Right, here's my situation:
For the last three years I've been using an Advent 7105 laptop. It's served me nicely, but is now a bit past its prime.
For my second year of Uni I'd like something a bit more up to date, and after some research I found this:

Low price, good specs (for my needs), good reviews.
Only problem is, it only comes shipped with Vista Basic. With Windows 7 coming out in a few months I'm concerned about compatibility issues, particulary for Office apps.
Is it worthwhile me forking out another £100 for Vista Home Premium, which will allow me to upgrade to W7 for free when it comes out, as well as paying a further £80 for the Office package?
Or can I get away with just having Basic and getting the Office package?
Many thanks in advance.
You can't upgrade to Seven, since you seem to be British thus inside the EU.
You can just get that laptop and when Seven is out, just get a cheap OEM version for around 130 or something. Or you stick with Vista, i don't think you'll run into a lot of compatibility issues.
VB is fine. It's XP, but slower.

This is true.
you could always buy that then pre-order windows 7 before august for just £49, then when it comes out in october you are sorted.
OR just hold on to the current laptop until October, when Windows 7 comes out and there could possibly be a better deal on better hardware/
