So I've had my xbox for about 3 or 4 years now, and just recently in the middle of a game, it shut off and started showing the two red lights. It says it's overheating, but the console is pretty cold all around. I opened it up to check for dust, but I didn't really find much. I also didn't completely take off the white thing covering the fans to check in there. What can I do to fix this?
Put it in a cool place? Is there room for it to "breathe", where it is used?
Yeah, there's plenty of room. When I turn it on, it works fine for about 5 minutes, and then it goes to my blank TV screen. The xbox still runs too, when the lights are flashing. I felt all over my xbox for heat, but all I felt was cool air
Maybe applying new thermal paste would be a good option. Do you have the tools to do this?
The exhaust comes from the back. Feel there. If it doesn't feel hot then that's weird imo, but same process. Open it up, look at the heatsink, it's probably caked with dust. I had this problem a few weeks ago, literally there was nowhere for the air to flow through the heatsink. Clean it out, and then test it. If you still have a problem, you'll probably have to reseat the heatsink, new thermal paste, etc.
Or you can send it in to MS. You will void the warranty by opening it, and I'm not sure how much they will help you afterwards if both of the above don't work. Personally, if it's that old, I'd rather pay $15 for some thermal paste and a can of air rather than ~$100 for them to open it up and clean out a heatsink, which is all I wound up doing.
To open it up you need a small flat bladed screwdriver, and 3 different sizes of torx screwdrivers, I believe 6,7 and 12. YOu can get away with a 10 for the size 12, and probably a 5 for the 6 and 7 if you're careful. The small ones are for removing the heatsink, otherwise you just need the 12 to get to the heatsink to clean it out.
Where would I find some thermal paste?

Local computer parts store, best buy, or something of the sort.
It could be that the sensors are malfunctioning. That actually would be the most likely with age and it being cool.
Replace thermal paste
GO.
My xbox has started doing this, I found out the fan has snapped inside. It's still under warranty though, I haven't opened it.
