When my ipod was knocked out of my hand and it's screen cracked rendering it useless I quickly looked up for ways to fix it. First I called apple to see what rates they charged for a replacement. I was shocked to hear that it was almost $60 to repair my second gen screen. So I looked for an alternative, cheaper route. I happily found that a new screen was only $20 on ebay with tools to do the job. So I bought the screen, when it arrived I pried the screen off very carefully and tried to attach the new screen. The little cord that you plug into the ipod didn't fit. Instantly I knew what was wrong. I had ordered the wrong generation of ipod screen. That put me out $20. So the next day I bought the right screen for my second generation ipod. It was $16. So when it arrived 2 weeks later, I quickly unwrapped the little manila envelope and plugged the screen in. It fit! I was overjoyed and continued to line everything up and push it into place. With great excitement I turned on the ipod and tried using it. It didn't work. I tried taking it out and replugging in the cord, but to no avail. So I searched for a cause. It turned out that the ipod has a plastic frame on the inside. And when you open the ipod it's hard not to break it. And of course, mine was torn to shreds. So in conclusion, do not try to do a home fix on your ipod touch. The two screens plus the the new midframe I have to buy will put me out $56.
tl;dr I tried fixing my Ipod Touch at home and had to buy two screens and a new plastic thing which was basically the same price as sending it to apple.
You really shouldn't try fixing something unless you know exactly what you're doing when it's as small as that.
I realize that now.
Youtube tutorials have saved my ass on alot of things, such as PSP custom firmware, safely modding and hacking the wii, replacing PSP screens, Upgrading the harddrive in an iPod Mini to an 8GB CF card, etc.

No sir.
Broken screens are accidental damage and aren't covered in the warranty. It'll run you $119 for a replacement iPod because they dont actually repair the screen

If it was covered under the warranty it shouldn't cost anything. If you ask, normally they'll give you a price to repair it.
I did the same thing to my ipod.
I dropped and my ipod touch back in the day, it racked the digitizer (the touch sensitive part, the actual screen was unharmed).
I found a 3rd party business that replaced the digitizer for $40 including parts and postage. They did a faultless job, and when my iPod properly broke (as in wouldn't turn on) about 4 monts later I actually sent it off to apple under warranty and they didn't notice that it had been tampered with. Fun.
