• Airlock - Badass app to lock your Mac when you walk away and unlock when you come back

Basically it pairs with your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad via Bluetooth. When you walk a certain distance (set in settings), it locks your computer. It can be bypassed by using your account password. When you walk back within the distance, wham, your computer unlocks in front of your eyes. Requires Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion: http://themha.com/airlock/index.html?s=a (User was banned for this post ("Wrong forum (again)" - cosmic duck))

Except it'll have the same problem as those self locking cars, when you walk away you'll be plagued by thoughts of "did it really lock?" or "Maybe it malfunctioned this time because I left in a hurry while the cpu was busy?" but you can't go back to check because then it'll unlock when you get close. The only solution would be to put your iphone down somewhere away from your mac but if you're in a location where this app has any use in the first place (somewhat public locations) you can't really because someone might steal it. Quite useless app really, just make your password below 10 chars and it shouldn't be any hassle to unlock it manually. Much more convenient (and cheaper) than wasting battery on keeping the bluetooth adapter running on your iphone.
Sounds kind of cool, makes me wish I had a mac to try this now. [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] Is there anything similar that works with windows?

It puts itself in high priority. If you turn off bluetooth it WILL lock. It there's no signal, or it cannot find your location or distance, it locks.
Sounds pretty cool in theory, but I have a feeling it would be more of a hassle and not very useful in practice.
I use it, and I really like it. It doesn't even kill my battery life as I thought it would have (on my iPod touch).
That's a really awesome idea. If only PCs had bluetooth...
I think you should have posted this in the Apple Subforum.

Christ, because it takes that long to type in your password to unlock it, doesn't it?
That's a really awesome idea. If only PCs had bluetooth...
They do... it's a $7 usb nub made by IOgear, , sub-produced by Widcom, and sports a Broadcom chipset. Instandly found and operates with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Linux 2.6.x without additional drivers, but does have a CD for the XP driver, or you can use Windows Update to obtain it. Might work with Macs too, not sure.

Keeping bluetooth on, on your media device burns its battery faster.
Awesome. They need to release a Windows version of this software.
Yeah, another useless app running in the background, marvelous !
Yeah, another useless app running in the background, marvelous !
Why would you have useless apps running in the background? It's called msconfig, yo.
Keeping bluetooth on, on your media device burns its battery faster.
Hasn't made a difference for me.
Awesome. They need to release a Windows version of this software.
I already do this with a simple python script on linux, since my netbook has bluetooth. It's real simple to implement. Porting it from linux to windows is probably as simple as changing the command that locks the screen.

So basically if your iphone isn't with you at all times, your computer is pretty much worthless.

You can do this in Linux using BlueProximity. Edit: Or a bash/python script. There's also a windows program to do this, but I forgot the name of it.
