• Gaming build for my dad (£550)

Hey, I'm looking for a nice gaming build for my dad, I've already got a case sorted ( http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=14 along with it's default fans ) which is just something I have lying around. He's mostly interested in playing GTA 4 as he has become bored of playing it on consoles and he also owns Portal 2 which he is looking forward to playing. I'm at a £500-£550 limit and everything will have to be deliverable to the UK. Bare in mind that all I have is the case w/o PSU. He may also be interested in recording GTA 4, but I wouldn't worry about that too much, Thanks. [editline]6th May 2011[/editline] I also already have a monitor along with a mouse/keyboard and speakers.
Get an i7 Motherboard combo, and the rest someone else can add in
Would you be okay with a parcel forwarder? It would make everything so much easier (and possibly cheaper even with the added shipping cost, I hear UK/Australian hardware sights are rather pricey). If not, what are some decent UK hardware sights? I'll go from there.
http://i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af150/The_FalconO6/CurrentLogicalPCBuyingGuide/Guide.png make something out of this, there is a part where he says something about buying in the UK, amazon maybe?
not worth losing support and longer delivery times OP do you need an OS
We've already got Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit) ready, so no.
Your dad is cool, OP. [editline]7th May 2011[/editline] Wish mine or any of my parents could play videogames with me Also you're nice with your father
I just made a build and it's affordable, but I don't know what could be improved, if it is compatible and I'm not too certain about the power supply. But I'm hoping for pointers in the right direction. The 120mm fan is chucked in because I lost the one that was in the case I'm going to use. So hows this? Took the GPU down a bit and got the Phenom II 965 Black Edition instead of the 955 along with a different motherboard.
Let me have a try, if you're going with AMD just get the 955 and OC it to the 965s speeds. [editline]8th May 2011[/editline] Here's a base to start from. [editline]8th May 2011[/editline] or a aftermarket CPU cooler.

I'm mainly worried about compatibility.
Sorry about that, you're going to want a P67 motherboard - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-boxdp67deb3-intel-p67-s-1155-pci-e-20-(x16)-ddr3-1066-1333-sata-6gb-s-raid-matx is the cheapest, find one with two x16 PCI-E lanes at 16/16 or 8/8 or 16/8if you'd like to crossfire in the future.
H67 mobo and a unlocked CPU? Nope.
So what I just posted but with a P67 motherboard? Ok so something like (With an in stock gpu)
Yeah, I know, I clicked P67 and that one showed up, you can check for yourself.http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/motherboards-intel/socket-1155-intel-p67 [editline]8th May 2011[/editline]
So what I just posted but with a P67 motherboard?
Yes, and maybe an in stock GPU, all you need to look really is the motherboard socket and CPU socket and RAM type (Socket 1155, DDR3 RAM).
Supposing the following is compatible, I think I'd be happy with it.
Consider http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-msi-hd-6870-hawk-with-twin-frozr-iii-fan-4200mhz-gddr5-gpu-930mhz-1120-streams-plus-free-shogun2 it's not much more and has a good cooler and is better, or possibly a 6950. A 6850 is fine, though, and will play everything fine.

That's a GTX 480, too.
PCI-E X4 has a larger effect on games than synthetic benchmarks
PCI-E X4 has a larger effect on games than synthetic benchmarks
It seems that it depends much on the game itself.
it's whether the game is more CPU or GPU oriented, if a game's bottlenecked by the CPU then being slightly slower isn't really going to have any effect that's probably why synthetic benchmarks don't show the difference well
