I am starting college in just over a week, and am looking into getting a mac before starting college year 2 (UK), I'm planning on getting a job and saving every bit of money I get from christmas and my birthday etc, and expect that I will have around £2000 by this time next year. Are there any new mac series going to be released or anything I should look at? I know it's hard to predict what will be avilible this time next year.
who knows what Apple will have out next year. All we can do is wait and see.
Well it's all rumours at the moment, for all we know they may start making macbooks out of batten-burg cake by next year. You should see if your college has a discount, mine has a £500 discount on all macbooks.
I know that they do, but I can't find out how much until I'm on using their network to access the apple website, and I don't start college 'till the 7th.
We were told on the tour in June (that was one of the selling points for me)
Come back and ask us this time next year.

What the flying fuck i ordered my macbook pro 15" like a week ago but i only get the usual 4% off.
Just before the end of the year i asked my teacher why the fuck we don't get macs from school and he said they are trying to make a package deal. A macbook pro (probably 13" i dunno) with the whole adobe package for the same money as just the macbook.
So i ordered one without discount (only the 4%) but i took the ipod deal. Means i pay 34 euro for an ipod touch 8gig which i can sell or keep. thats a discount of like 180 euro.
Anyhow, apple does the same thing every year. Updates are somewhat predictable. Usually takes a couple months to half a year. Ipod discounts seem to be a yearly thing too.
Oh and apple offers you the choice to pay monthly. So if you got a job and don't care about the extra % you have to pay then you could go for that as well.
well prices are supposedly going to go down 7% to 10% by the next refresh of the laptops and desktops. that would be nice. don't quote me on it though, just heard that rumor floating around
It's likely that they will ditch the core 2 duo, it's been around for a really long time. They will probably include a mobile nehalem that are due to come out in early 2010. So yeah.
Do you think so?
I am not a tech geek but to me it seems core 2 duo is good because it's been around for this long. It's getting more and more support.
I don't understand why they haven't put quads in any non mac pro machines yet tbh.
I don't understand why they haven't put quads in any non mac pro machines yet tbh.
Lets see.
MacPro - Already got
iMac - Not possible untill the mobile quads are out. iMacs use mobile chips (hence the all in one and slim design).
Mac Mini - Not a chance
Macbook Pro - Possible, but not yet. 2010 though.
Macbook - Doubtful, but maybe.
Macbook Air - not for a very long time.
Intel don't make any quad cores for laptops?
And then El Jobso goes on stage and tells us we're getting quad-core MBPs and 4GHz Mac Pros and we'll switch back to PPC again

Not at the moment...
Quoted from wikipedia - Mobile Nehalem-based processors will follow in late 2009 or early 2010.
Rumour has it that they might include these or the arrandale i3's.
I think.
some laptops do have intel quad cores, so yes intel does make mobile quad cores. i believe Asus and Alienware have them in their high end models.
You will fully regret getting a mac laptop. Just don't do it.
Heres my story with my macbook. I bought this thing three years ago, To date i've had the wristpad replaced twice, the keyboard, the mobo, the hard drive 3 times, the power cable (both parts separately), the fans died twice, and as of right now the wristpads have hairline cracks again. I just can't be fucked to send it off yet again and get it fixed.
If all you do is surf the web and don't really care for anything at your uni being compatible with your laptop, then go for it. Otherwise get a windows laptop. They're aren't always amazingly beautiful, but they don't charge you $400 for a 2gb ram upgrade either. :/
What the hell did you do? My WhiteBook's still running fine after three years after getting the area around the touchpad fixed with the recall for free.

wtf did YOU do? i have a old Apple laptop from 1994 that works completely fine, like it's almost new. It's a 180c btw. and I had an iMac G5 PPC that lasted from mid 2004 that only died because of user error, idk what it was really bit I know it was something I did, hell I'm turing the old case into a picture frame since I tore everything out of it a few month ago.
the wrist pad cracks are from the little raised parts on the lid. This laptop doesn't do well in backpacks that actually have books in them lol. it gets hot here in the summer, so i avoid using my mac then since the past two summers ive had a fan die. while my laptop gets it worse than an average users, its pretty average treatment for a student. i have to take my laptop in my backpack, so unless i file down those raised edges (voiding the warrenty) i'll just have to deal with the persistent cracks.
mac desktops are amazing if you're rich enough not to care :3. Building your own pc is a whole lot more fun imo though.
I sense you have bad luck with Apple products, I've owned (including my parents and my brother) over 18 Macs, 7 ipods, and 2 iPhones and we have not had not one issue with any. Except for me killing our G5 iMac.

Lol yeah. I've owned a black macbook my mom bought me as a gift. If she haden't bought it on credit I would have taken it back personally. Not saying macs are bad, they just aren't my type. Its nice to know you're overpaying before you buy it too. :3

I'm really hoping that you didn't buy 18 macs during the OSX/Macbook era.
I hope you also mean 90's and 80's macs.

eh, understandable. Also I never pay full price, either I get student discounts or my Dad gets them for free from work or he gets them from Apple as a gift after doing an interview about some software or his experience with Apple and their products. We actually never owned a PC.

80's, 90's, and OSX eras. But mostly OSX since we did some major upgrades recently and like I said, we never pay full price for Macs
Oh, I see
I know you bought like 5 macs during the OSX era, did you get anymore than that?
I don't pay for full either, I use my dad's Developer discounts. I think you get up to 25% on them, which is rather decent. The OS is brilliant, the hardware is "meh" at best, IMO - but the OS is brilliant because of the hardware, which is a bit of a pity.
It's like how Apple manages to do brilliant things yet fuck up so bad sometimes, especially with the App Store.

OSX purchases: iMac (iSight) 2006, iMac 2007, iMac 2009, Mac Pro 2007, 2 Unibody Macbooks 2008, White MacBook 2009.
idk what the 80's were since I want born yet and from the 90's I only remember owning a PowerBook 180c (first computer I ever used at age 3), PowerBook G4, iMac G3, iMac G4,and a iMac G5, Mac Pro G5. that only leaves like 5 purchased in the 80's.

I feel the same way about Macs. the OS rocks but the hardware is just weak at times. with my student discount I get $100 to $300 off, my dad get 20% off for medical photographer/marketing/visual communications at a hospital. and one of the doctors we works with gave him a new iMac after doing some HUGE educational project for the hospital in about 2 weeks.
I hear all these rumours going around about an October macbook refresh, I'm not sure wether to wait to buy one. Our college is pushing students to get their own hardware (we're a design and communication college so it makes sense, all the broadcast section computers are switching to laptops)

yes the refresh is in October, but I've heard it maybe in November this time since the last refresh was late.
