What happend when you shut your computer off by the power button on the tower of the computer? My step father ALWAYS bitched at me for doing it and i never understood why
Are you holding it in?
It just closes your computer down, normally. However, you can change what the key does somewhere in your computer software. If you hold it down, it does a "Immidiate Shutdown" which will shut down your computer immidiatly.
Yeah, I knew that if you hold it down for 10sec it will "Force shutdown." I know you can change what it does, for vista its in the power settings. So there are no effects for just pushing the button and going to bed? Even over long periods of time?

Oh, so I shouldn't do it then, thanks ALOT DevilX
If you just press the button and release it before the system shuts down, it'll be fine. It's the same as turning it off from the Start menu.
Well, i've personally never had any issues with it, nor have i had issues with removing a memory stick in the same way. However, when i was but a child and had a PS1, me dad told me "NOT to remove the memory card when the console was turned on." Didn't care. Carried on doing it, boom. All data gone. So i assume it would do this, i don't know from first hand experience however. [QUOTE=Dr Nick;26409726]If you just press the button and release it before the system shuts down, it'll be fine. But if you make it so it shuts off whilst still looking at the desktop, and not showing the "Shutting down" page, then that's a bad thing. If it seems to shut down as if you had pressed "Shut Down" then that is fine.
Well, as long as it don't fuck my shit up it's fine. I just built the thing and i don't wanna fuck it up. So it's fine if i press it? cause im getting 2 answers now. I hate going to the start menue to shut it down... I'm very lazy. Haha.

"Windows Repair" was the first thing meeting me when I started it up. It isn't just a gimmick, it can really corrupt your files, though rare.
Holding the power button down for 10 seconds to shut down will do no physical harm, it may however end in corrupt files if something is being written when you do it. Switching a computer off from the mains supply (Or the rocker switch on the power supply) can damage a computer physically. I have personally lost 2 graphics cards this way.

Instead, either press it once (so don't hold it) or just shut down normally and you'll be fine
