If i get a new motherboard and cpu, will i have to reinstall the OS on the hard drive? If so is there a way i can save my files? And will the Os repair disk i got with the computer work or will i have to re-buy vista?
No, you'll have to install new drivers though most likely.

Also, don't "re-buy" vista, get windows 7 or XP, they're both better than vista.

No vista is better than xp.
Get 7 instead of Vista.
7 or XP.

No it's not.

Tell me specifically what's wrong with Vista. I'm not saying the OP should get Vista, 7 is loads better but Vista is better than XP.

bloated, looks nice, but at the cost of performance, XP can be made to look nice (not that it needs to) and still perform better than vista. and other such things i'm sure other people will list.
Please don't turn this into a HURR THIS OS IS BETTER THAN THAT ONE thread...
OP, you should not need to reinstall the OS, but yes you will need to install new drivers for the motherboard (and make sure you uninstall all the old ones first). Vista will probably ask to be reactivated, in which case you might just need to put in your product code (should be on the disk) and it'll be all good. If it bitches about it, just call Microsoft's help line, and say that you've upgraded hardware and need an new key.

There's no significant performance loss.

yes there is.
yes there is.
Show me.
I am not planing on buting a new OS or upgrading, please make posts that are relevant to the question and not which OS is better.
Short answer: You only need to reinstall some drivers.

You can make XP look like Vista. You won't need Vista anymore!
Vista Transformation Pack - Google it.

You're telling me XP supports DX10 and DX11? Have fun using a 8 year old OS.
Can we stop the OS war? :v:
7 Wins anyways.
yes there is.
Yeah, sure there is. If you're still on a fucking Pentium 4, that is.
If you buy a new mobo and CPU and use the same HDD, there IS a chance you'll have to re-activate windows. The reason being that Windows creates a hash on every system, stores it, and checks it at every boot up. If the system changes dramatically then you will fail the check and Windows will lock itself. (It's an old school anti-piracy measure.)
There is a very rare occasion where support won't be able to help you (Happens on XP SP1, so not really relevant, but good to know.) and in that case you would have to re-install. But since you have Vista you're good to go.
