I'm about to buy an external drive of 1TB but now I am starting to second guess myself.
It seems the way to go would be a usb/1349/eSATA drive.
Are there any other things I need to take in consideration?

Do you have room in your case to install an internal drive? An internal one is probably cheaper, I found [url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152102]this[/url] for $65. Or do you want the external for portability?
Whatever you do don't get a Seagate one...they have chronic overheating issues...I ended up taking mine out of the enclosure and making it a internal drive

It's software is also known not to be 64-bit compatible.
I use 64-bit Windows 7.
Also, Prismatex, that external is not eSATA.

You don't need eSATA - USB 2.0 is fine.
my seagate is pretty nice actually
it isnt overheating, and i don't use its software anyway.
but it gets noisy occasionally.

The only time that I notice any speed differences with an external compared to an internal is when I am intsalling a game or large program onto it.

Not the portable ones that use the USB 2.0 system they die and are not nearly as reliable as a fixed external or internal
However an external is extremely comfortable due to it's plug and play and portability.

Stop being stupid. A lot of the large capacity external hard drives are [b]exactly the same as internal hard drives.[/b] If they don't overheat, they'll keep going. I've had the same external hard drive for several years now and it works fine. I've never had a single external die on me, and it seems like facepunch hasn't experienced these chronic issues you're talking about either.
