So my Computer-Illiterate Stepfather got That Fake Virus Scan Page...

You know that famous browser-highjacking fake virus scan? My stepfather happened to fall for it, and naturally his system is now fucked up. I've personally never dealt with it before, so what is the proper way to remove whatever virus is now on his system? Would a traditional scan with MSE do the trick?
You can try a MSE and MBAM scan in safe mode.
That will probably get rid of it.
Take the advice in this thread but show it to your step dad it will save you having to do it for him in the future unless you dont like him and charge him a few quid.
Id advise a fresh install of windows if hes got nothing to lose easier than pissing around with safe mode and downloading other stuff.
Just leave it scanning, if it finds anything, it can easily dispose of it in safe mode and you are sorted.
As opposed to waiting for windows to re-install, and installing your drivers and applications again.

Or connect his HDD to another PC and scan it like an external drive.

Stepfathers never take advice, I have several friends with that problem.
Don't forget to slap your dad telling him not to fucking believe that dumb obviously fake shit.
Had that problem. MSE didn't find it.
Install MBAM and scan with that.
If MBAM can't remove it, Try one of the many Linux LiveCDs, like Avira, or G-DATA. Have had much success with both.
MBAM in Safe mode.

It looks convincing enough for Computer-Illiterate people, however my mom never installs anything without asking me first.
Combo-Fix, solves it all
