• GTA4 getting worse?

I haven't played GTA4 in a while and I decided to play a few minutes ago. It used to run fine maxed out, but this time it ran really slowly and had TERRIBLE lag I went to check my temperatures and it was around 100 degrees (Celcius) for each core. I'm about to go try again, but that was really scary. Could this have just been a GTA4 error? I've been playing Assassin's Creed maxed out just fine. I'm getting a new cooler soon, but I can't afford it yet.
That's REALLY bad, those temps. Make sure your fans are actually functioning, and look into getting a better cooler, that could destroy your CPU.
100C per core? OUCH Check the heatsink for dust, You wont believe the state my 1950GT got to, Air literally could not pass through the heatsink for dust :v:
Also the latest patch can slow down performance if you have it maxed out due to new options available.
Doesn't beat me! My old cpu was 120 celcius when i did a cpu stress test. when i switched cooling paste i could see it had been boiling under there :v:
Yeah, I just restarted because I kept getting a D3D error, told me to restart. I think it's fine, it's idling at 50C. About to go test on GTA4, then Assassin's Creed.

Silver melts at approx. 950C and boils at approx. 2150C. If it really boiled, you would be in trouble dealing with that volcano inside your rig. But it has very likely been damaged. OP: Clean your heatsink and fan.
GTA 4 sucked tbh. No planes, no place to play with (like las venturas desert or red county in SA), the whole fucking map is smaller than my balls.
Ok, so, I just tested it again. My fan IS running, but it is the piece of shit Intel gives you. It maxed out at 100C it said, but it was normally running 70-80C It ran like a dream again, I think I just need a new CPU cooler. Is 70-80C dangerous? Also, I am sorry to hear you suffer from elephantitus. [editline]08:04PM[/editline] Core 0 went up to 90C, but that was the highest. The others were reaching around 80 or so max. So 70-80C once again. I really need a new cooler I guess.
Is 70-80C dangerous?
It indeed is. A load temperature of ~74C on my old PC with broken fan caused 1/10 of the transistors to be burnt a little.
I don't have any thermal paste.
You should really apply some!

Well I have a Q9400, not sure if that changes much, but it's a quad core. So I should lay off GTA4 and other processor intensive games until I get a new cooler?

Don't use the vacuum cleaner, however, use canned air or a compressor at low pressure.
This computer is only like 3 weeks old. It doesn't have much if any dust in it. But I'll try.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! I found out that my fan and Heatsink was loose. Running at about 40C idle. Haven't stressed it yet, but that is a dramatic improvement.
Running at about 40C idle. Haven't stressed it yet, but that is a dramatic improvement.
Still pretty hot, but see what it reaches under load as the fan speeds up as the temperature increases.
50-60c
Use Prime95 to simulate a worst-case scenario, and see how hot it gets.
Your TJMax is the absolute max temp you should be getting before your CPU is damaged. My Intel Atom has a TJMax of 90 degrees My Q6600 has a TJMax of 85 degrees Basically, anything above your CPU's TjMax and you've most likley damaged your CPU. Always aim to keep your CPU temperature at least 10 degrees below your TjMax under load. Edit: TJMax of the Q9xxx series is 100 degrees. You're lucky.

My load temps are currently 60 at max. I just was running GTA IV maxed out for about an hour, and that was the peak temperature. Whenever I'd Alt+Tab occasionally it'd show up in the mid 50s.
