Like the title says, I'll be reading Dante's The Inferno for what ever reason. Is there something I should expect? I told a friend that I'll be reading it & she said it was hard to understand.

I hope you have a rudimentary knowledge of ancient, biblical and medieval italian history
It's good to read Homer's The Odyssey / The Iliad as well as Virgil's The Aeneid before you get into it - gives you more backstory :)
some people have a problem with this sort of thing but I'd recommend reading it alongside something like CliffsNotes. it will help you understand the plethora of biblical and historical references that would otherwise completely escape you
