How long does it normally take you to go through it? And should I be using something other than the Windows default to de-fragment?
It all depends on how fragmented your hard drive is. Wrong section by the way.
Yeah, it just occurred to me that I'm posting in Fast Threads, not Technical Support.
I use defraggler personally.
It's been de-fragmenting for 3 hours now..
If it's your first time running it, then that's completely normal. It needs to move files and compact files so it will take some time.
Well, the last time I ran was.. 10/29/2009 Haha, yeaaahh..
Tried doing this once, took over a week nonstop and not going over 57% i think it got stuck. fukn a
How big is your drive? If you're using a 1tb drive you might be facing over 24 hours of defragging.
around 500 gb
It's really important to do it regularly. Vista and (I think) windows 7 do it manually but because I'm running XP I didn't do it for around 6 months then when I did, loading times literally halved.

Damn. Of course I do, thanks for pointing that out.
My hard drive is 250 GB, I only used 97 GB of it though. [editline]05:13PM[/editline] OKAY so it finished. However, it still says "Your performance can be increased" Bullshit. [editline]05:24PM[/editline] Eh, I'm just gonna go get Defraggler.
I reccommend Auslogics Disk Defrag It works very fast on mine, like 3-5 minutes for 200 gb :P
3 minutes I use a defrag screensaver that defrags whenever my computer is idle.
2.3TB of uncompressed storage. I defragment it once a year, and takes a good 10'ish hours. I just leave it overnight and tell it to auto-shutdown once it's done.
