Facebook's huge wallet means they don't have to worry about a healthy profit margin while they're getting started. Mark Zuckerberg is on the record as basically saying he doesn't care about making money on the Rift right now, he wants to establish a market for VR. Facebook intends on having the first consumer version be sold near cost.

I guess freaking the fuck out when facebook bought oculus was a little bit shortsighted, eh facepunch?

don't hold your breath, shit can turn to worst at any time. However right now is a good turn of events and I hope it steers towards that direction, I will buy an oculus if only if it cost around at least 100 - 150 price range.

Wouldn't shortsighted be looking at what Facebook does for Oculus' release right now and basing your opinion on that?
I'm sold! I was considering it when the estimates were much higher, but under £250 is a great price

That's efficent and consumer friendly strategy, even if the later probably isn't done with consideretion.
I could have sworn I heard something about $300 for the consumer version when the first devkits were rolling out. Oh well, $400 isn't dreadful.

$150? They're already aiming to sell it near the cost, if they sold it for $150 they'd be making a huge loss. And if Facebook hadn't bought the company, then Oculus certainly wouldn't be selling it this cheaply.

That said, after they've recuperated the costs for R&D, I expect the prices will start to drop.
It's amazing how far they've come in just two years.
So that's $400 for the rift, $250 for the Novint Falcon, $216 for the kinect, and $50 for the onahole to get the full waifu experience

In the article it says that $400 is a high estimate and $200 is a low estimate.
Sounds like I would buy at $400. Hopefully my computer would be good enough though

cheaper than dating
I used one of these at a Game of Thrones exhibition, it was like you were going up the wall.
Honestly can't wait till these are fully out, they work fucking amazing when it comes to heights and stuff. I'd love to see something like Mirrors Edge use this.
I feel rather silly for the things I said about FB round about now.

I felt similarly at first, but at least it's all looking smooth now. Much better than being right about them I suppose!

Yes, they're going for the long strategy. Grab that market majority with cheap ass Rifts and in 5 years time they'll be making massive dosh on the games and licenses.
