Luckily I use Outlook for my mail. I can still send and receive mail. This is definitely a problem for people who don't do that.

If it wasn't that important, then how come 10k posts were being made every 30 secs about it on twitter?
Up for me?
Because the thread has been bumped and it's already been fixed.
A routine server upgrade caused Gmail to have downtime in what the company are calling a “big deal”. It seems that the majority of Gmail’s 150 million users were affected by the outage which was caused by engineer’s miscalculations of server loads.
Ben Treynor of Google apologised in a blog post, "We know how many people rely on Gmail for personal and professional communications, and we take it very seriously when there''s a problem with the service. Thus, right up front, I''d like to apologise to all of you - today''s outage was a big deal, and we''re treating it as such."
The routine upgrades to the company’s servers are regular occurrences. The engineers take some of the servers down while the traffic is re routed to other servers. The problem on this occasion is that there was a miscalculation in the amount of servers should be taken down and the other could not cope with the demand of traffic.
This outage follows similar problems to the Gmail service in February and March.
The free version of Gmail has been ranked as the world''s third most-popular e-mail program, behind similar services provided by Microsoft and Yahoo.
Google''s last major technical problem happened in May, with millions of people unable to use its main search page, as well as Gmail and Google News.
